Bhatkal, February 22: Farmers, fishermen, minorities, and the members of Scheduled Castes on Tuesday took out a protest rally in the town against the implementation of the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Act in coastal areas of Karnataka.
Hundreds of people took part in the rally that passed through the main roads of Bhatkal. A memorandum was submitted to the Assistant Commissioner against the CRZ implementation.
Addressing the protesters, Rama Moger, State General-Secretary of National Fishermen Organisation (NFO) and former vice-president of Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat, described the Act as a draconian law which would rob the poor people of their livelihood.
Kerala, Maharashtra, and Goa had been exempted from CRZ rules because of pressure from them. The CRZ Act was enforced in the State.
