Mangalore, February 22: Two local members of Sanatan Sanstha, a right wing Hindutva organization, which had allegedly involved in many terrorist activities across the country including Margao blast, have accused the officers of National Investigation Agency of violating their human rights under the pretext of interrogation.

Udaya Kumar and Vinaya Kumar, the brothers from Aniyooru under the limits of Neriya Garam Panchayat in Belthangady taluk on Wednesday appeared before media in the city accusing the two NIA officers - Seturam and Manu N K - of consistently harassing them since last four days.

The NIA team is in the district in connection with the ongoing probe into 2009 Goa blast. On October 16, 2009, a bomb blast rocked Margao town of Goa killing at least two persons and causing huge loss of property. CBI had revealed that it had found vital clues indicating Sanatan Sanstha's involvement in the blasts. Senior member of Sanatan Sanstha Jaiprakash, who hails from Kadaba in Puttur taluk was later named as one of the main accused in the case. Highly placed sources have confirmed that NIA had questioned Udaya and Vinaya, who are not only the activists of Sanatan Sanstha, but also close relatives of Jaiprakash, who is absconding. It is also suspected that the duo used to live with Jaiprakash in Goa in the past.

Addressing media persons the Kumar brothers said the two NIA officers were misusing their power to investigate the terrors suspects. “On February 20 the officers called us for investigation and made us remove all our clothes. They also sent police to our house and confiscated our driving license, election card, adhar card, our sister's marriage album, ration card, school certificates without giving them receipt of any kind”, they said.

The brothers complained that the officers threatened their father demanding all information and documents. “Out of fear our father handed over all documents asked by them”, they said.

They said that the officers demanded information regarding the terror suspect Jaiprakash and accused us that we too had a hand in the 2008 blast”, revealed the duo.

They alleged that during interrogation the officers pulled their hair hard and inhumanly beat them with fists and kicked, despite getting 'honest' answers. “We were not allowed to go to the toilet for nearly two and a half hours”, they said.

The duo also alleged the interrogators that on Tuesday they threatened to harass formers' sister. “After hearing their vulgar language, we are worried about the threats given by them. We have got the impression that these officers can go to any extent by misusing the law”, they said.

“We were threatened by these officers that we should not go out of the house. The government and private dispensaries denied treatment to us and refused to give us a medical certificate as proof to torture inflicted on us. We had to bear the agony of pain day and night”, they said. However, they failed to show any sign of torture on their body.

Fight Back

The brothers said that they would file complaint against the NIA officers Seturam and Manu with Central and State Human Rights Commission, for physical atrocities meted out to them and for mentally harassing their parents. “We also have decided to complain against them with the senior officers of NIA”

The Sanatan Sanstha members also said that it was the responsibility of the BJP led Karnataka state government to protect them from the hands of anti-terror investigators. “Due to the atrocities committed and threats given by the NIA officials our life is no more secure. Since we are the citizens of Karnataka the responsibility of protecting us lies with the state government”, they said.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti activists Ramesh Nayak, Anil Kamath were also present in the press meet.

Bengaluru, Apr 20: As many as 59 people were arrested on Monday for attacking police and health officials at the minority dominated Padarayanapura in the city when they went to quarantine some people, police said.

"Fifty-nine people have been arrested (in Padarayanapura) and have been taken into custody. The people attacked the officials who had gone to quarantine some poeple who were the primary and secondary contacts of three COVID-19 patients," a police officer said.

A large number of people, mostly youth from the minority community poured on to the road on Sunday and thrashed the health workers who had gone to quarantine some people who were the primary and secondary contacts of the health workers.

The officials were allegedly beaten black and blue.

Some local residents who went to the rescue of these officials were also thrashed.

According to police, one among the arrested is a woman by name Firoza who had allegedly instigated the mob to attack the health and police officials.

Subsequently, a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident and to quarantine those who are suspected to be infected with COVID- 19.

Blowing sirens, a strong contingent of policemen carried out a flag march in the area.

The Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao later called on Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and briefed him about the situation in Padayarayanapura.

The violent incident drew angry reactions from various quarters.

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said an incident like the one at Padayarayanapura will not be tolerated.

"I met Chief Minister and briefed him about the incident. He has told us to act strictly. I have told the same to my officials. We won't tolerate such acts by anyone. We have arrested 59 people. Five FIRs have been registered," the minister told reporters.

Bommai, who visited the area took the senior police officials to task for not being present on the spot when the incident took place.

"Where were you? What were you doing when the incident happened?" he questioned a senior police officer.

"We will demonstrate to the people what is containment zone, what is seal down and what is police action," he said.

Condemning the incident, Health Minister B Srimulu warned those who indulged in such activities.

"The inhuman act of attacking police and health workers in Padarayanapura is highly deplorable. Our government will take appropriate step against those indulging in the attack on health officials and police officials who had gone there to protect them," he tweeted.

BJP's firebrand MP Shobha Karandlaje reacted sharply.

"Seculars attack #CoronaWarriors when they were quarantining the secondary contacts of #Covid19 in Padarayanapura of BLR. While #HealthcareHeroes are working overnight to contain #CoronaPandemic, these morons are assaulting our heroes! Let's not be soft on these anti- nationals!" Karandlaje tweeted.

Meanwhile, the minority leaders called on Congress state president D K Shivakumar to persuade the people of the minority community to assist in identifying the COVID-19 patients or carriers.

Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy too condemned the attack and demanded stringent action against the culprits.

The Congress MLA from the area B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan while condemning the incident, sought to know why the health workers and police officials went to the area late in the night and not in the morning.

"Why did the police and the health workers go in the night when I had told the BBMP Commissioner that I will take them at 10 am?" Khan told reporters.

Defending those who attacked the government officials, Khan said they were uneducated labourers who didn't know what they were doing.

Padarayanapura and Bapuji Nagar were among the first areas to be completely sealed as people were not abiding by the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: After pro-Kannada outfits called for a state-wide bandh today, the police are on high-alert to avoid any untoward incidents.

The dawn to dusk bandh was called demanding implementation of Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended certain percentage of jobs to Kannadigas in private & public sector companies.

There is no official holiday declared for schools and colleges. Besides, all government institutions and private establishments are open.

But, in some parts of Karnataka, autorickshaws and taxis, including Ola and Uber stayed off the roads.

Even though the bandh is unlikely to hit normal life in coastal Karnataka, stones were pelted on a Tirupati-Mangaluru bus in Farangipet.

Hubballi, Apr 20: Dejected over failure to get alcohol for almost one month, a forty-five year old man and his sister died after consuming hand sanitizer in Kalghatgi taluk of Dharwad district on Sunday.

The deceased persons, identified as Basavaraj Venkappa Kuruvinkoppa and Jambavva Kattimani (50) of little hamlet Gambyapur, died at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The wife of the deceased person has lodged a complaint at Kalghatgi police station stating that her husband had been addicted to alcohol since the last 10-12 years.

Basavaraj and his sister have reportedly consumed hand sanitizer several times since the last 2-3 days, severely deteriorating their health as they felt it is replacement for liquor and has high levels of spirit content.

They were admitted to KIMS only by Sunday early morning after complaining of serious pain in the stomach. The KIMS director Dr Ramalingappa Anthartani said that the deceased appears to have consumed too much sanitizer and the doctors couldn't save their life as they approached the hospital very late.

He also claimed that he is awaiting the postmortem report to know how much quantity of hand sanitizer the deceased had consumed.

"Condition of the patients was very critical when they were admitted to KIMS hospital. It seems that they had drunk too much hand sanitizer for non-availability of liquor. Consumption of hand sanitizer could prove fatal as it has high chemical contents" KIMS director Dr Ramalingappa Anthartani said

The Karnataka government has prohibited the sale of liquor ever since the Centre declared lockdown to control the spread of Coronavirus. This has prompted the alcohol addicts to buy liquor by paying hefty prices in the black market.

But, many poor people in villages have started consuming cheaper hooch and this trade has recently flourished in the rural areas.

Hooch trade has also prompted officials of the excise department to conduct raids in several villages of North Karnataka region. The many theft cases of liquor shops are reported in Karnataka as drunkards have become desperate to get alcohol.

The Karnataka government was planning to allow the sale of liquor after the end of the first phase of lockdown. But, the rising cases of Corona positive cases has prompted it to extend the ban on liquor sale until May 3.
