A year after death, NRI's body finally flies home

Dubai / Kasargod, February 27: A year of he died in an accident in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the body of a Non Resident Indian, is being flown back to his family in Kerala.

With this, the yearlong relentless efforts by family members and their sympathizers in the oil rich Kingdom to overcome legal and bureaucratic hurdles, proved to be fruitful.

Krishnankutty Nair, 55, who hailed from Kindangoor in Kottayam, Kerala, died on February 24, 2011, but could not be brought back home because his sponsor refused to complete the requisite formalities to transport the body.

Nair was working as driver with the Saudi sponsor in Jizan for 18 years, and died after the car he was driving hit a stray camel.

According to the Consulate General of India in Jeddah, Nair's sponsor refused to complete the formalities and demanded money for the damaged car before dispatching the body.

"The Consulate offered to pay all expenses in transporting the body but he refused to fulfill his obligation. The matter was taken up with the Saudi authorities and Jizan Governor for help," S D Moorthy, Consul (Community Welfare), said in a statement.


In the meantime, the sponsor also filed case against Shihab, a well-known social worker who had been authorised by the deceased's family to pursue the case for compensation for the damaged car.

However, Saudi authorities finally prevailed upon the sponsor and forced him to complete the formalities to transport the body.

"The Saudi Ministry of Interior Affairs issued the requisite clearance for transportation of the body yesterday (Saturday). The mortal remains of late Krishnankutty Nair is leaving today from Jizan to Cochin via Riyadh," said the statement on Sunday.

New Delhi, April 3: Chairman of Lulu Group, Yusuffali MA on Thursday contributed Rs 25 crores to the Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) to combat coronavirus.

"I have humbly contributed INR 25 Crores to the PM Cares Fund to support all relief works in India's fight against the COVID-19," Yusuffali said in a tweet.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had created PM CARES Fund and appealed to all the countrymen to show their support for the cause.
The prime minister is the chairman of the trust and its members include the defence minister, the home minister and the finance minister.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A 27-year-old man, who died of breathing problem at Banglagudda in Surathkal, has tested negative for COVID-19.

The entire area was panic-stricken following his death on Tuesday evening. Suspecting COVID-19, his throat swab samples were collected, said Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty. Now the test has proved he was negative for coronavirus.

The youth had collapsed suddenly on Tuesday evening and was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Karnataka Congress leader and Kanakapura MLA DK Shivakumar said on Monday that in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, people of his assembly constituency have taken a unanimous decision of remaining under voluntary lockdown until July 1.

The decision was taken after he headed a meeting at Kanakapura on Sunday, at the office of Kanakapura Municipality.

"Let us consider the situation after July 1, hold a similar meeting, and take the next decision. It has nothing to do with the state government's mandate. It came to the conclusion that this was a decision that we all voluntarily took," said DK Shivakumar.

DK Shivakumar informed that the merchants have agreed to sell groceries, fruits, vegetables, fennel, meat and other food items from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. only. District authorities, DCs, SPs and hospital representatives have decided the timings of clinics and drug stores.

He further said, "In this self-motivated lockdown, unnecessary driving should be avoided. The social gap must be maintained. No one should be oppressed by anyone."

Member of Parliament DK Suresh, Ravi - Ramanagara District Collector Archana, SP Anoop Shetty, and Kanakapura Planning Authority Chairman Jagannath were also present in the meeting.
