Udupi, February 27: Congress candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha bypoll Korgi Jayaprakash Hegde filed his nomination here at DC office on Monday.

He filed his nomination exactly at 11: 15 am and handed over the nomination papers to DC Dr M T Reju.

He was accompanied by dozens of Congress leaders including Union Minister for Corporate Affairs M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge, former union minister B Janardhan Poojary, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President G Parameshwar, All India Congress Committee general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka, Madhusudan Mistry, Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai and Mangalore MLA U T Khader.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion Mr Hegde expressed his confidence to defeat the BJP and JD(S) candidates in March 18 by-election.

He said though he had lost the same constituency as a new candidate in the last election, the situation has changed now. “Even after losing the election I have been with the people responding to their problems. The people will favour the Congress in this election and we would certainly win. If the public opinion gets converted as votes then the Congress would win with a huge margin,” he said.

He said that the reason for the Congress losing the last election was the lack of time for publicity purpose. But the situation is not the same any more. Uncertainty has loomed large over the existence of the BJP government in the State. The people should analyse the work taken up by the last MP who was elected from this constituency and then exercise their franchise, he said.
