Mangalore, February 29: Two people were killed when a timber laden lorry skidded off the road and plunged into a pond in the early hours of Wednesday at Adyarkatte on the outskirts of the city.
The deceased have been identified as Rajashekhar and Sudhakar, both residents of Uppinangady. Lorry driver Murali suffered injuries in the accident. It is learnt that one among the deceased was Murali's brother and the other was his brother in law.
The mishap occurred around 3:30 am when the lorry was on its way from Sullia to Baikampady. It is assumed that driver lost control over the lorry due to drowsiness.
However, the driver managed to get off the lorry at the nick of time and saved himself. His two relatives trapped inside the lorry and crushed to death when the lorry rolled into the pond.
The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary at Government Wenlock Hospital. A case has been registered at Mangalore Rural Police Station and investigations are on.
