Mangalore, March 1: The BJP is a party that fields men of bad character during elections but the people now have realised it and will teach them a lesson in the upcoming Udupi-Chikmanglur by-polls, said B. Ramanath Rai, MLA and DK District Congress Committee President.

Addressing media persons at the district Congress office here on Thursday, Mr. Rai said that by accepting that he committed a mistake by giving election ticket to 'bad' candidates in the past, BJP State president K S Eshwarappa has admitted that BJP indeed fields unworthy candidates during elections. “Eshwarappa has said that he will not give ticket to bad people in the future. This means that BJP accepts that it did give tickets to wrong people in the past,” said Mr. Rai.

Speaking on Congress' chances in the upcoming polls, Mr. Rai expressed confidence that the party will fare exceptionally well. “People have seen BJP flop in all aspects of governance and its failures and wrongdoings including the porngate issue are now before them. It will see failure in the polls as well. The candidate (Jayprakash Hegde) fielded by the Congress is an able candidate. He has an understanding of law and legal affairs. Besides, he is a man of good conduct,” Mr. Rai said, appealing to the public to vote for his party.

The District Congress President also said that the BJP government is making attempts to suppress media. “The blue film issue was brought out by the media but the ruling BJP is planning to suppress them”, he said.

Mr. Rai also took a dig at former CM B S Yeddyurappa for supporting the wrongdoers of the blue film scandal. “Those who did it as well as those supporting it, including the former chief minister, have lost morality. They should be ashamed of what they are doing,” he said.

Bengaluru, May 30: Health Minister B Sriramulu banned the consumption of chewing tobacco in public places on Saturday, which is marked as World Tobacco Day. The ban would include chewing paan masala and spitting in public places.

In June 2013, the state banned the manufacture, storage, sale, or distribution of gutka and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. On October 26, 2016, the state proscribed all kinds of chewing tobacco, containing tobacco or nicotine or both in accordance with the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka is the second state in India to ban e-cigarettes. The state also prohibited single cigarettes. Until September 2019, the state counselled 15,698 patients in tobacco cessation centres set up in private dental colleges.
