Mysore, March 2: Lokayukta Superintendent of Police, S E D'Souza, died of a massive heart attack in his office room in the city on Thursday afternoon.
The 57-year-old officer, who served in Mysore for the last three years, complained of a shooting pain in his left shoulder.
He took some medicine and went to rest for a while in his office room. Colleagues who had never seen D'Souza rest in office went to check on him after a while. To their shock, his body had turned cold. They rushed him to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
He is survived by wife Anitha D'Souza, sons Albert Vivek D'Souza and Alfred Sunil D'Souza.
A native of Karkala in Udupi district, D'Souza joined the police service as sub-inspector in 1974.
He served in various capacities in the CID, CoD and the Lokayukta in Bijapur, Mysore, Mandya and other places. He was also part of the special task force formed to nab forest brigand Veerappan. He was due for retirement in 2013.
Known for his integrity and simplicity, D'Souza rode a humble TVS moped to office every day, including on the day he died.
During his tenure, the Lokayukta office had become a nightmare for the corrupt. Out of the 40 cases decided at the city court last year, 22 were under the jurisdiction of the Lokayukta.
The convicted included revenue inspectors, village accountants, chief executive officers, a medical college professor and a gram panchayat president.
