State govt. workers to hold protest on Mar 15 demanding increase in pay

Mangalore, March 10: Members of the Karnataka State Government Workers' Association will hold a 'satyagraha' protest on March 15, demanding salaries in accordance with the sixth pay commission from the state government.

Addressing mediapersons at the Press Club in Mangalore on Saturday, H Sanjeeva, President of the DK district unit of the Association, said that most states in the country have implemented the sixth pay commission scale salaries for state government workers. “The Karnataka government is still paying us salaries based on the fifth pay commission. On the other hand, the neighbouring state of Kerala which is not as economically sound as our state, has implemented the sixth pay commission for its workers”, he said.

Owing to relentless appeals and efforts of the Sangha, the state government formed a remuneration committee on 15-06-2011 placing IAS officer Subir Harisingh, the Principal Secretary to the Government, as its in-charge, and has asked it to submit a report in nine months' time. The period will complete on March 15. The protest is being held to draw the government's attention towards the approaching deadline. If there is no response from the state government by March 15, the protest will be intensified, Mr. Sanjeeva said.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue. 

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari. 

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position. 

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

Bengaluru, July 17: An infant with heart-related complications died after 10 private hospitals in the city allegedly refused to admit him over coronavirus fears.

In search of a hospital to treat his one-month-old child, the helpless father drove around for 200km in the city. The child breathes its last after suffering for 36 hours.

The infant’s health worsened around 11am on Sunday. “A doctor from a nearby clinic visited our house and said the baby had heart-related issues. As advised, we decided to shift the child to a private hospital,” the father said. The family lives in Basaveshwaranagar.

The parents went to several private hospitals, but in vain. “We visited hospitals in Bavaveshwaranagar, Chord Road, Sheshadripuram, Goraguntepalya and Yeshwanthpur. None of them agreed to treat our baby, and we returned home at night,” the father said. 

“On Monday morning, we started the journey again. This time, we went to a hospital near Jayadeva flyover. We were driving near Marathahalli when our child stopped breathing. We rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: India should take a cue from the UK and Italy and allow final year medical students to skip exam and bring them into the hospital system immediately to fight the war against COVID-19, noted cardiac surgeon Devi Prasad Shetty on Friday said.

The Chairman and Founder of the city-based Narayana Health said there should be some reforms in medical education like the UK and Italy.
In the UK, he noted, final year medical students have been told that they don't need to appear for the exam, and they will be given pass based on the past performance and they can get into the hospital system to fill the shortage.

Italy got 10,000 more doctors following the move to cut short the duration of MBBS by nine months, according to him.

COVID-19 battle can be only won by young doctors and young nurses. Its like a war, Shetty told PTI.

He said: Senior doctorsnone of them will be able to touch the patients because they are past the age of 50. A person who is past the age of 50 is very vulnerable himself.

This is a very contagious disease. "But we dont have that many battalion (of doctors). We need one and half lakh doctors to manage all these government
hospitals and private hospitals (to fight COVID-19)", he added.
