Udupi, March 11: Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary H N Ananth Kumar said on Saturday that the Congress was in a pathetic situation after the results of the five State Assembly elections were announced.

He told presspersons here that it would be no surprise if the UPA government collapses by the end of the budget session. New political realignments will take place at the Centre, he said.

He also said that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi had admitted that organisational weakness was responsible for the failure of the party in Uttar Pradesh.

The allies of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) were getting restive. The Congress had become a liability for the allies of the UPA and the country, Mr. Kumar said.

Bypoll

He said the BJP would win the bypoll to the Lok Sabha from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency because of its track-record of development.

He told presspersons here that there was a triangular fight in the constituency as the Janata Dal (Secular) wanted to find its own ground here. Though the Congress and the JD(S) were two faces of the same coin, they were fighting against each other fiercely. This was a new political development.

As Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, D.V. Sadananda Gowda had worked for widening of national highway 66 in Udupi district. It was because of his efforts, Bangalore-Mangalore train got extended to Karwar. He was instrumental in the development of Koti Chennayya Theme Park, Mr. Kumar said.

He had responded to the problems of coffee and arecanut growers in Chikmagalur district.

Udupi district had seen development under the leadership of Mr. Sadananda Gowda and former Minister V.S. Acharya in the last four years. “Hence our candidate V. Sunil Kumar will,” Mr. Kumar said.

“AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes was Udupi MP for 17 years, and Union Corporate Affairs Minister M. Veerappa Moily, who was earlier Chief Minister of the State, had done nothing for the development of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts,” Mr. Kumar said.

Asked if former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would campaign for the BJP in the bypoll as there were only six more days left for campaigning to end, Mr. Kumar said: “All leaders of the BJP will campaign in this constituency by March 16.”

Local BJP leaders Udaykumar Shetty, Kiran Kumar, Shyamala Kundar, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, and Jyoti Putturaya were present.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: A mobile app and a portal offering technology-driven solutions to manage and mitigate floods in urban areas were launched here on Saturday by Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka.

The mobile app 'Bengaluru Megha Sandesha' was developed to disseminate information on rainfall and flood forecast, location-specific dynamic weather directly to the public. "The in-built features of the app and the information provided for a city is the first of its kind in the country," a press release said. This is a system of providing rainfall, flood forecasts and early warning to the officials of government agencies in the city through SMS to their mobile phones, social media platforms and a dedicated web portal, the release said.

The information provided would help the civic authorities act in advance and manage the floods, it said. The portal 'Varunamitra' is for information on the weather. The information provided is based on real-time data from 100 telemetric rain gauges installed and maintained at various locations across the state, it said. Rainfall forecast is based on the weather research and forecast models developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, the release said.

The information on flood forecast is based on the hydrological model, hydraulic routing and automation of the results. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), took up this project on the urban flood model for Bengaluru city. The project was funded by the Central government's department of science and technology, the release added.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Karnataka High Court on Wednesday rejected the plea by Congress leader Digvijay Singh seeking directions to the police to allow him to meet rebel Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs who are lodged in Bengaluru.

Earlier in the day, Singh said at a press conference, "I have filed a plea in the Karnataka High Court, seeking permission to meet Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs who are putting up at Bengaluru. I have decided to be on fast and shall take a call on that after the decision of the Supreme Court and the High Court," Singh said at a press conference here earlier.

Singh said, "The BJP is busy in toppling duly-elected governments. We had successfully thwarted their plans to destabilise the MP government but we were let down by Jyotiraditya Scindia who had a very successful career in Congress."

"We never expected that he would ditch us and join hands with the BJP," he added.

The Congress leader also said that the BJP government had become insecure since the Kamal Nath-led government started tightening the laws on mining.

"Chief Minister Kamal Nath drafted a new mining policy for the sand under which the mines were allotted through auction. All this was unpalatable to the BJP and from Day 1 they started offering money to our Congress legislators," he said.

"In BJP, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee's kind of leadership no longer exists. The leadership which controls the BJP now includes people who have joined hands to do all kinds of unscrupulous things which has led to a stage in India where the banks are collapsing, non-performing assets and unemployment are growing," he added.

Earlier today, he was put under preventive arrest after he sat on a dharna near Ramada Hotel here allegedly for not being allowed to meet the 21 rebel Congress MLAs lodged in the hotel.
