B.R. Shetty, B.M. Hegde among five feted by Corp Bank on foundation day

Mangalore, March 13: Five individuals were given the Lifetime Achievement Award by Corporation Bank in the city on Monday.

The recognition was part of the celebrations to mark the 107th Foundation Day of the Mangalore-based public sector bank. The bank was founded in Udupi by Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim Saheb Bahadur in 1906.

Individuals who received the awards were B.M. Hegde, physician and the former Vice-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Deemed University) Manipal, Kadri Gopalnath, saxophone artiste, B.R. Shetty, entrepreneur, CEO and MD, New Medical Centre Group of Companies, Abu Dhabi, Ramana Rao, cardiologist and physician, and Ela Bhatt, founder, Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA). Ms. Bhatt was absent and was represented by another person from SEWA.

Dr. Hegde said that everyone's work matters in a bank. On victories and defeats, he said that one should treat triumphs and disasters equally as “imposters”. “The best pillow is a clear conscience,” he said.

Mr. Shetty said that he would help if Corporation Bank could take up the cause of refurbishing a hospital in Udupi. On the occasion, Ajai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director, Corporation Bank, launched an application for Android tablets and smart phones. The application, once downloaded, will be able to inform the phone user about nearby branches and ATMs of the bank with a map.

Playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK) sang on the occasion.

1,925 new COVID-19 cases in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jul 6: With a record 1,925 new cases across the state during the last 24 hours, Karnataka's Covid-19 tally rose to 23,474 including 13,251 active after 9,847 were discharged till date, an official said on Sunday.

"Of the total cases across the state on a single day, Bengaluru accounted for 1,235, taking its positive tally to 9,580, including 8,167 active," said the health official in a statement.

With 37 succumbing to the disease in the state, including 16 from Bengaluru, the state's death toll increased to 372, with 145 from this tech city since March 9.

Of the 603 discharged from across the state during the day, 302 were from Bengaluru, taking its total number of cured to 1,267 so far.

Of the 243 cases in the intensive care unit (ICU) across the state, 132 are in Bengaluru, 15 at Dharwad, 12 at Kalaburagi and 10 each at Ballari and Raichur.

Of the 16,899 samples tested in the day, 14,649 were negative and 1,925 positive. Of the total 7,06,425 samples tested so far, 6,65,525 were negative and 23,474 positive.

After Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada reported 142 positive cases followed by Ballari 90, Vijayapura 57, Kalaburagi 49 and Udupi and Dharwad 45 each.

Of the total 603 discharged, 52 were from Kalaburagi, 37 from Ballari, 36 from Dakshina Kannada and 22 each from Udupi and Dharwad.

Another COVID-19 patient passes away in Karnataka

Bagalkot, April 4: A COVID-19 positive patient passed away in Karnataka's Bagalkot on Friday, taking the total number of deaths in the state to four, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkot.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2650 including 184 people who have been discharged or cured or migrated, and 68 deaths, as per the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

NRI Habeeb Ur Rahiman Uppinangady conferred doctorate

Newsroom, Feb 10: Habeeb Ur Rahiman, a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration at Kingdom University Bahrain, has been awarded doctorate from the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi.

He has completed his thesis Influence of Quality of Work Life, Ego Status and Job Attitude on Organisational Commitment and Productivity of Bank Employees under the guidance of Prof Rashmi Kodikal.

Habeeb Ur Rahiman is the son of Yusuf and Ayisha couple from Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district.

After obtaining his Master Degree (MBA, Finance) from Visvesvaraya Technological University in 2012, he had worked in Bearys First Grade College, Kundapura and P A College of Engineering, Mangaluru before migrating to Bahrain.
