Chief Minister puts naxals on notice

Kalasa, March 15: Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has warned stringent action against naxals operating in the Malnad region of the State.

He was speaking at a campaign meeting for the byelection to the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency in the town on Wednesday. The operations had been intensified against the ultras, the chief minister said.

Steps would also be taken to provide basic amenities to people in the naxal-hit areas, Gowda said. The chief minister and Home Minister R Ashoka sought votes for party candidate Sunil Kumar.

Voting will take place in 1,630 polling stations in the March 18 bypoll. As many as 251 polling booths in the naxal-affected areas have been identified as hyper-sensitive.

Crises

Sadananda Gowda, in a veiled attack on former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, said the BJP had faced embarrassments in the State on several occasions which had been overcome and the recent confusions caused by leaders would not have a big impact.

He was replying to a query by reporters in Chikmagalur, on Yeddyurappa's statement that Gowda would feel embarrassed if he campaigned for the party candidate in the byelection to the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency.

Yeddyurappa had made the comment in response to Gowda's remark that eight cases against Yeddyurappa were still pending inquiry.

Gowda said he would not feel embarrassed as the party had seen bigger crises earlier.

“These minor hiccups will not have any impact on the government and I have the political acumen to steer the State towards progress amid such constraints,” the chief minister said.

Vijayapura, June 18: Shoukat Ali Sumbad, a local farmer, has donated land for the construction of Chennamma memorial, modelled on the Kittur fort, at Sindagi town in Vijayapura to celebrate the town's connect with the valorous Lingayat queen who fought the British in 1824.

Basava Jaya Mrutyunjaya Swamiji of Lingayat Panchamasali Peetha Kudala Sangam said Shoukat Ali came forward to donate his land adjacent to the state highway when local authorities failed to provide land for the memorial. 

"The committee led by Basava Jaya Mrutyunjaya Swamiji sought a 15x10 plot but when I went through their plan of constructing a model of Kittur fort, I decided to donate 425 sq ft," said the 61-year-old farmer. 

"Rani Chennamma is the pride of every Indian, irrespective of caste and creed, and my contribution is nothing compared to her sacrifice for the nation," he added.

Shoukat Ali, who lives in the neighbouring town of Almel, said he is a man of modest means but proud to make the contribution. "I own nine acres of land in Almel. I have six sons and two daughters. Two of my sons run small businesses in Mumbai. Ten of us live in a small house in Almel," he said.

“I also work as a broker to sell or buy sites. I had bought 15 guntas of land in Sindagi for my children some 15 years ago. When our MLA MC Managuli and Swamiji sought land for the memorial, my entire family agreed wholeheartedly” Shoukat Ali said.

“As Chennamma’s history is linked to Sindagi, there has been a demand for a memorial here since 2008, but the town municipal council failed to provide land due to political and technical reasons,” said Swamiji. 

“There were plans to observe a Sindagi bandh in the first week of June to protest the indifference of authorities. But then Sumbad gave us his land. We have formed a committee to construct a model of Kittur fort and a bronze statue of Chennamma at a cost of Rs 28 lakh,” he added.

Mangaluru, May 18: A boat which was engaged in an operation to fix the pipe relating to the reverse osmosis plant of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) at Tannibavi turned turtle due to strong wind.

Two workers had gone missing in the incident that occurred on Sunday late evening, and one of them was rescued shortly thereafter.

The person who has not yet been found happens to be Pandu Pist from Mumbai. The person who was rescued was Santosh from Dakshina Kannada.

Three workers from West Bengal who were facing danger were also rescued.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.
