Udupi, March 17: About 12.53 lakh voters will decide poll fortunes of 14 candidates for the bypoll tomorrow to Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha seat, where the three major parties Congress, BJP and JDS have gone on a high voltage campaign.

This is the second bypoll being held in Karnataka after D V Sadananda Gowda assumed office as Chief Minister.

The by-poll was necessitated after Gowda vacated the seat following his election to the assembly recently.

Gowda criss crossed the constituency during campaigning to ensure BJP retains the seat despite facing consistent attempts by former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to get himself reinstated ever since he was forced to demit office after the Lokayukta report on illegal mining indicted him.

Yeddyurappa had recently stated he would not ask the BJP high command for Chief Ministership and that it is 'a closed chapter.'

The former Chief Minister did not campaign for this bypoll, irked over the BJP high command turning down his demand for a "suitable position" in the state unit.

BJP had finished a poor third in the November 2011 Bellary bypoll, which saw former minister B Sreeramulu constesting as an independent and winning by a huge margin ahead of Congress.

While BJP has fielded former Karakala MLA Sunil Kumar, former minister K Jayaprakash Hegde is the Congress nominee and Bojegowda is contesting on the JDS symbol.

Election officials said about 7,000 security personnel, including 10 companies of paramilitary forces would keep vigil across two districts of Udupi and Chikmagalur.

Extra security has been provided in 77 Naxal infested areas. Of the total of 1633 polling stations, 231 have been categorised as hyper sensitive and 788 sensitive.

Counting will be taken up on March 21, the day Gowda presents his first budget in the assembly.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur.

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman.

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way.

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment.

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Bengaluru, May 2: Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah have urged the state government to arrange free-transport facilities to those stranded labourers and their family members to return their native places.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the former chief minister criticised the State Government for having decided to collect bur fare from them, ''three-times more than the regular fare''.

Stating that the migrant labourers, who had been stranded ever since lockdown had been clamped in the entire country are not in a position to pay for their travel, Siddaramaiah urged the state government to treat them with human face.
