Traditional fishermen lay siege to dredger on high seas

March 22, 2012

Mangalore, March 22: In a novel protest on high seas off the coast of Mukka, near Suratkal traditional fishermen laid siege to a dredger and a tug used to tow it on Thursday.

The protest was held under the banner of Coastal Traditional Fishermen's Union to oppose a move by Mangalore Special Economic Zone authorities to lay an effluent discharge pipeline near Mukka.

Around 100 angry fishermen sailed to sea in several traditional boats and surrounded the dredger.

The sea agitators instructed the crew on board the dredger and the tug to vacate the area and lay anchor on high seas and not to venture into the area till the matter was sorted out with the authorities concerned.

When they vacated the area, the fishermen shouted slogans and celebrated by bursting crackers in the mid-sea.

Speaking on the occasion, Union president B K Boloor said that as many as 5000 fishermen will be affected if the effluent discharge pipeline was laid.

He said that a few years ago there were no less than 50 traditional boats fishing in the Baikampady-Suratkal stretch. However, the traditional fishing in this has been affected these days due to the effluents discharged by the companies like MRPL, BAFF, MCF and KIOCL etc.

Mogaveera Mahasabha action committee co-ordinator Shobendra Sasihitlu said that Mangalore tehsildar Ravichandra Nayak had issued an order in November, 2011, banning the laying of pipeline to the sea, saying it will affect the fishery business thereby affecting the fishermen community. However, the MSEZ authorities have not stopped the work yet.

"In last November, they brought concrete pipes in a truck and unloaded it on the sea shore at Mukka. However, it was later shifted by the contractor following severe objections from the fishermen in the region. The work of laying effluent discharge pipeline to sea is in progress Padre and other places. Very soon they may start laying the pipeline to the sea, which will not only pollute the sea, but also will pose threat to the breeding of fish species in the estuary. Fishermen in the region will have no other option but to look for alternative trade, if they start disposing effluents to sea," he added.

A 7-year-old Dalit girl who had gone missing from outside her residence in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district on June 30 was found dead last evening.

Police sources said that the body with severe injures was found in a forest area bordering her village. The young girl had been sexually assaulted before the murder, according to police.

Victim’s neighbour, Raja, 25, who belongs to the Pandaram caste, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

While they have included murder charges in the First Information Report (FIR) against him, they are awaiting the post-mortem report to add sections of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offence Act (POCSO act) in the FIR.

"The girl was playing outside her home at 4pm. Her parents then found her missing and her father filed a complaint at the station at around 7pm. Efforts were then underway to find the girl," said an investigating official.

They found the minor's body in the forest area near her village on the evening of July 1. Her clothes were in a state of disarray and her face was severely injured.

"She has been beaten with sticks on the face and injuries are clearly visible. The post-mortem will reveal the actual cause of death," says an official from the district.

Police sources further add that the neighbour had found the minor roaming around the area on Wednesday and allegedly took advantage of the fact that she was alone.

"During inquiry he admitted that he had sexually assaulted and murdered the girl," says a police official from the district. "Further investigation is underway and we will have more clarity once we get the post mortem report," he adds.

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.
