MSEZ pipeline issue: Fishermen submit appeal to DC

Mangalore, March 26: Representatives of the Coastal Traditional Fishermen's Union submitted an appeal to Deputy Commissioner Chennappa Gowda on Monday, opposing the move by Mangalore Special Economic Zone authorities to lay an effluent discharge pipeline near Mukka.

Around 100 angry traditional fishermen had laid siege to a dredger and a tug used to tow it on Thursday, asking them to vacate the area and lay anchor on high seas and not to venture into the area till the matter was sorted out with the authorities concerned.

Following the protest, MSEZ authorities complained with the Deputy Commissioner as a result of which the DC had invited representatives of the Fishermen's Union to discuss the matter.

The fishermen are worried that as many as 5000 of them will be affected if the effluent discharge pipeline was laid.

The Deputy Commissioner in an attempt to pacify the fishermen offered to provide jobs and education facilities to fishermen to which many denied saying that there are many elderly fishermen who would not benefit from this offer. The Deputy Commissioner then offered to provide mechanized boats to them provided they invest part of the money required. One boat will be allotted to a group of 20 fishermen, as per the offer of the DC.

A decision will be taken by the Fishermen's Union after a meeting among its members, it is learnt.

Mangalore, Feb 4: Final chance to present evidence and record eyewitness statements with the Deputy Commissioner of Udupi G Jagadeesh regarding the December 19 violence will be held on February 6 between 1100 and 1300 hrs.

Eyewitness and evidence presenters can depose at the Assistant’s Commissioner’s Court Hall in the Mini Vidhan Soudha in the city.

The Deputy Commissioner said that no evidence would be accepted after this last round of public hearing.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 10: At least 15 RSS activists protesting against the 16th Chikkamagaluru District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Sringeri were detained, Police said here on Friday.

The Sangh Parivar activists gathered near the entrance of the hall where the event was being held and started sloganeering against the election of the leftist Kalkuli Vittal Hegde as the president of the literary gathering. The police then interfered and detained several protesters to bring situation under control.

Despite protests from the right wing organisations, the event went ahead and began as per the schedule.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.
