Udupi, April, 3: Members of Udupi District Jewellery Association on Tuesday observed Jewelry bundh and staged a dharna at Chittharanjan Circle, protesting against the hike in the tax on Jewellery.
Responding to the state-wide bundh call to protest the doubling of duty on gold and imposing excise duty on unbranded jewellery in Union budget, all the shops in coastal district remained closed.
Speaking at the protest meet, Udupi District Jewellers' Association president Jaya Acharya said that jewellers would continue agitation if their demands were ignored by the government.
He said the government should immediately withdraw the import duty on gold bars and coins in the interest of the trade and their consumers.
District Jewellers' Assocation Secretary Subrahmanya Shet, Treasurer Anantapadmanabha Shet, leaders Chandrashekhar Rao, Murari Acharya, Rayesh Kini were present among others.
