Mangalore, April 5: Urging the fulfillment of their demands, workers employed on contract basis by Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) will stage a protest, in front of Mescom head office on April 17.

The workers resolved to stage day and night protest, at a state-level convention of the Mescom workers here on Tuesday.

Speaking after inaugurating the convention, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Vice-President B Madhava said that contract labour system had been abolished by the Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act 1970.

However, neither the Central Government nor the State has decided on how to implement the Act.

“It is the American imperialists who dictate terms on the governments,” he alleged.

The workers should unite and fight for their rights, which were denied to them.

The demands to be kept forth by the workers include minimum monthly wage of Rs 10,000, Provident Fund facility, wage slip, employment cards, earned leave facility, health care, and equal remuneration for equal work.

The contract workers of Mescom include operators, security personnel, watchmen, bill collectors, meter readers, computer operators etc.
