Brahmin food festival at Malpe beach on Sunday

vegMalpe, April 5: The Silver Jubilee Celebrations Committee of Udupi Zilla Yuva Brahmana Parishat will be organising a beach food festival on the Malpe beach on April 8.

Announcing this at a press meet in Udupi president of Parishat Ranjan Kalkur said the festival was being organised as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the parishat.

Nearly 20,000 people were expected to visit the beach on that day. Over 30 vegetarian dishes and juices will be on offered.

The dishes which will be available at the fest include sevige kurma, gunda menskai, moode kodekena, avalakki pulao, biscuit roti, pundi gatti, bisi bele bath, pongal, patrode, buns, masala dosa, tuppa dosa, tomato bath, avalakki vaggarane, goli baje, podis, maddi, sheera, sukrunde, halbayi, dry jamun, halasina appa, nippattu, chakkuli, karada kaddi, and chettambade.

Juices include balehannu (banana) rasayana, ibudla rasayana, mavina hannu (mango) rasayana, yellu juice, hesaru bele payasa, and carrot kheer.

The fest will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mr. Kalkura said cultural programmes, including bhakti sangeet, Bharatnatya, folk dance, and humour shows would be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Department of Kannada and Culture was sponsoring this programme. Office-bearers of the parishat Bhaskarrao Kediyoor, Ramesh Bhat, Sridhar Bhat, and B. Vijayraghava Rao were present.

Mangaluru, Mar 7: After coronavirus cases were confirmed in different parts of the country, there has been a sudden jump in demand for mask and safety gears like gloves and sanitizers in Mangaluru and Udupi.

With the increase in demand, medical shop owners said that they were finding it difficult to meet the demand.

In fact, there is a demand for bulk supply of masks and gloves. There was demand for masks when Covid-19 was confirmed in China two months ago. Bulk quantities of masks were purchased in order to supply them to Indian employees working in China. A few private firms had purchased masks from Mangaluru in the month of December.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: As many as 5,536 new COVID-19 cases and 102 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Tuesday, according to the State Health Department.

With these new cases of coronavirus, the total number of positive cases in the state stands at 1,07,001 including 64,434 active cases, 40,504 discharges and 2,055 deaths.

India on Tuesday reported 47,704 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's count of coronavirus cases to 14,83,157, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, there are 4,96,988 active cases in the country while the number of patients cured/discharged and migrated stands at 9,52,744. With 654 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll rises to 33,425.

Bengaluru, Apr 7: Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Monday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to announce a special package to help farmers, agriculture labourers and also working class in various sectors who are affected by the lockdown.

Mr Siddaramaiah put forth his demands during a telephonic conversation and the Chief Minister positively responding to it informed that he will formulate a programme keeping in mind the suggestions made by the Opposition, a statement from the LoP's office said.

It said, the Chief Minister also spoke to Mr Siddaramaiah regarding the government's decision to stop supply of free food for poor and needy through Indira Canteens.

Mr Siddaramaiah on Saturday had written to Yediyurappa urging him to utilise Indira Canteens efficiently and provide food for poor and needy until the coronavirus crisis and lockdown is over.

The former Chief Minister's letter had come a day after the state government had decided not to provide free food at Indira Canteens as concerns were raised about the quality and misuse that was happening.

It had, however, decided to continue to provide subsidised food- breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10, as usual.

Mr Yediyurappa during the phone conversation on Monday appraised Siddaramaiah that the decision to supply food by fixing a price was taken to stop misuse that was happening.

Mr Siddaramaiah, however, insisted the government should provide food free of cost to the poor and needy, by taking care that misuse doesn't happen.

The senior Congress leader asked the Chief Minister to take action against errant officials who allowed misuse to happen, the statement said, adding that Yediyurappa has promised to look into it.

Initially, the government last month had decided that the state subsidised Indira Canteens would provide food packets free of cost to the poor and needy in the wake of the lockdown.
