hegde_copyMangalore, April 5: The Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi has demanded the withdrawal of Karnataka Rajyotsava Award from city's leading dentist Dr Mithra Hegde, who earlier had claimed that she had been appointed as the personal dentist of President of India.

Addressing a press meet here on Thursday, Samithi president G Hanumanth Kamath said, a probe should be order by the government into the claims of the dentist, as the Rashtrapati Bhavan itself has clarified that her claims were false.

Dr Hegde, a Mangalorean, is a senior professor and head of department of conservative dentistry and endodontics, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte.

Following her claim of being chosen as the personal dentist to Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Dr Hegde had enjoyed wide media publicity especially in Dakshina Kannada in 2010.

However, an RTI application filed by former secretary of the Karnataka State Branch of Indian Dental Association Dr Shiva Sharan seeking information about the dentist's claims had revealed that she never had treated the President of India.

The reply from the Central Public Information officer on Oct 17, 2011, had clearly mentioned three points: 1. There is no panel of dentists at Present. 2. Dr Hegde has never treated the President 3. Dr Hegde has never been appointed as dentist to the President.

Mr Kamath said that one of the criteria for Karnataka State Government to honour the dentist with Rajyotsava Award in 2010, was her claim. Moreover, the award and false claim had helped her to increase her fees.

The dentist deserves stringent legal action for fooling the people, media and government, he said.

Mr Kamath also said that Dr Hegde should apologise in the public for fooling the people through false claims.

Dr Shiva Sharan said Dr Hegde had also violated the rules of Karnataka State Dental Council, which strictly prohibits any dentist from making any kind of false advertisements to attract patients.

He said that he had already taken up the issue with the Council, the Governor of Karnataka, the Rajyotsava Award Committee and the President. Council has issued a notice to Dr Hegde seeking her clarification over the issue.

Dr Suhan Alva was also present in the press meet.

According to the police, JD(S) MLC KT Srikante Gowda, his son Krishik Gowda, Chandrakala Aythu, Jagadish, and Raju have been named as accused in the FIR filed at Mandya West police station.

The FIR has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Disaster Management Act including unlawful assembly, rioting, wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, negligent act likely to spread infection of a deadly disease, etc.

Mangaluru, Jul 31: Muslims across coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada today observed Eid al Adha following the safety guidelines issued by the government amidst covid-19 pandemic.

While coastal Karnataka is celebrating the festival of sacrifice today, it will be observed in other parts of Karnataka and country tomorrow.

Congregational Eid prayers were held in many mosques while ensuring physical distancing norms. Only 50 devotees were allowed in mosques. Children below 10 years of age and elders above 60 years of age weren’t allowed.

Eidgahs in the region wore a deserted look as the government has temporarily prohibited prayers in the open grounds. The Eidgah at Lighthouse Hill in Mangaluru, which usually witnessed huge crowd during Eid celebrations, was also closed this time.

As expected, the celebration this time was a low key thanks to the restrictions placed in tune with the threat of coronavirus infection.

Prayers were held in Kudroli’s Nadupalli and Bundar’s Zeenat Bakhsh Central mosque. All those who entered mosque were wearing masks.

In Udupi city, Eid prayers were held at Jamia Masjid and other mosques with limited number of devotees. In Bhatkal took some of the mosques hosted Eid prayers with all precautionary measures.

Mumbai, May 13: Members of the Muslim community helped in performing the last rites of their 72-year-old Hindu neighbour in Sewri area here after the deceased's relatives could not reach for his funeral due to the lockdown.

Pandurang Ubale, who was paralysed since the last few months, died at his residence in Zakaria Bunder area of Sewri on Monday. He had been staying there along with his wife and son since some decades.

After his death on Monday, his relatives staying in suburban Mulund, Belapur in adjoining Navi Mumbai and Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district could not come over to his place in the wake of the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

As Ubale's wife and son were unable to make all arrangements for the funeral, they informed their neighbours, who came forward to help and even prepared the bier.

A neighbour, Asif Sheikh, who attended the funeral, said, We knew Ubale uncle since a long time. He always participated in our festivals and we used to be a part of their festivities. We all came forward to bid him a farewell and helped in performing his last rites."

Last month also, some Muslim men carried the body of a Hindu neighbour in suburban Bandra on their shoulders to the cremation ground after the deceased's relatives were unable to attend the last rites due to the lockdown.
