Mangalore, April 10: Dozens of students of a prestigious private college on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday evening staged protest on their college premises, alleging that relentless harassment by a lecturer of the institution drove a female engineering student, Mehnaaz, to her death.
Mehnaaz, 20, a student of BE second year (biotechnology batch) at the PA College of Engineering, near here was found by her friends hanging from the ceiling in her room at the college hostel.
It is learnt that the girl was still breathing when found by her friends around 3:00 pm. She was rushed to K S Hegde Hospital. However she breathed her last 4.30 pm without responding to any treatment.
Though the exact reason for the engineering student's extreme step was not confirmed by the police, her friends alleged that the harassment by a lecture drove her to suicide.
Protesting students charged the college management and lecturer with being responsible for the student's death.
The angry students' sit-in at the college, that began around 5:00 pm, continued into the night.
They demanded that stern action be taken against those staff of the institution, who allegedly harassed her.
Several glass panes of the building were damaged when the angry students began to pelt stones. However, the intervention of the police, brought the situation under control.
