Water woes: MRPL shuts Phase II, III units

Mangalore, April 14: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has shut down down phase II and III units following shortage of water supply after the district Administration directed MRPL to stop pumping water from Sarapady dam.

According to a press release, the refinery was receiving aroung 5.5 Million Gallons per Day water from Nethravati river.

The water availability in the Nethravati and its downstream dams started depleting in March. As a result, the district administration stopped the intake of water from the river.

The water availability in the refinery can meet the full load for one and half days.


In order to overcome the situation and pull the resources for next couple of days till Mangalore gets rain, it has been decided to shut down the phase III and Phase II units.

“There will be shortage of supply of products to MRPL fed locations. Further, the MRPL may have to incur additional demurrage on account of delay in unloading crudes because of ullage problem and loading of products,” the release added.

Bengaluru, May 26: Unknown miscreants have set ablaze 30-40 migrant labourers hutments in Bengaluru east, prompting police to take suo motu cognizance, an official said on Tuesday.

"As many as 30-40 migrant labourers' hutments have been set ablaze by unknown miscreants at Kacharakanahallin in KG Halli, we have taken suo motu cognizance of the crime," said a police official to media.

Police are investigating the arson invoking IPC Sections 143, 147, 188, 436, 123, 504, 506 and others.

"There was no loss of life in the arson as the migrant labourers were away at their hometowns because of COVID lockdown," said the official.

The labourers came from different parts of Karnataka to eke out a living and were living in those huts near the Rama Temple in KG Halli.

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Private hospitals cannot send back COVID-19 patients for any reason, district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said on Monday.

The Minister was addressing a meeting at the Father Muller Medical College here on the arrangements made for COVID-19 patients.

Dakshina Kannada district is quite advanced in the medical field. Hence, the government will not tolerate COVID-19 patients wandering from one hospital to another for treatment. Refusing to admit COVID-19 patients in hospitals is unacceptable, he warned.

Tumkur, Feb 9: A special puja was performed at the Durga Parameshwari temple and the Shaneshwara temple in Karnataka's Rangana Halli village to save people from coronavirus.

Yashwanth Shastri, a priest, said: "We performed this special puja on Friday to save the world from virus and diseases like corona and H1N1."

"Our ancestors used to perform a special puja for the betterment of society and save the world from viruses when they attacked," he said.

Coronavirus originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year and has since spread to various cities around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak as a global health crisis.
