Karwar, April 19: As many as 93 Muslim boys underwent 'khatna' (circumcision or surgical removal of the foreskin of the male organ) in an alleged unauthorised camp arranged by a quack and some religious heads in Dandeli on April 14.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when the Haliyal unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an inquiry into it. The Uttara Kannada district administration has ordered an inquiry.

J.A. Attar, president of the Haliyal unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA), has urged the district administration to arrest the quack who conducted the camp allegedly using a single scissor and a knife without sterilising them.

In a press release here, Dr. Attar said that the 93 boys could now be susceptible to health hazards and demanded immediate medical attention to them. He said that the quack, who hailed from Hubli, had collected more than Rs. 1 lakh for the camp.

Soon after the incident, the IMA contacted Inkanglo Jameer, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada, and informed her of the camp. The Deputy Commissioner then alerted the police and the Health Department officials in Dandeli and sent them to the spot. By the time, the officials reached there, 93 children had undergone circumcision.

The police and the health officials stopped the quack from carrying out further operations, IMA sources said.

When contacted, Ms. Jameer said that it was true that she got the information about the camp on April 14. After getting information she asked the police and health officials in Dandeli to check what had happened. The officials found that the camp was organised without the permission of the police, the local authorities and Health Department, she said.

When the officials found out that the surgery was being was conducted by an unqualified person and in unhygienic conditions, they asked the organisers of the camp to stop further operations, she said.

Ms. Jameer said that the District Health Officer was asked to hold an inquiry and submit a report.

District Health Officer Ashok Kumar said that the Health Department said blood samples are being collected to test if the boys were affected by any disease after the operation. He said that once the procedure is over, criminal cases would be filed against those involved in it.

New Delhi, Jun 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, on a plea challenging his election in 2019 from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as a joint candidate of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishiksh Roy issued notice to the returned candidate from the high-profile constituency on an appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court's order by which an election petition against his win was dismissed.

In the proceedings held through video-conferencing, the top court issued notice and tagged the appeal filed by G Devarajegowda for hearing with other similar pending plea filed by the BJP candidate on the issue.

Mr Devarajegowda in the plea said that his election petition was dismissed by the High Court on "procedural irregularities". The plea said that Mr Prajwal had resorted to unfair and corrupt practices and his election should be set aside.

It said the High Court did not consider the fact that by dismissing the election petition, it was running a risk of having a representative in parliament who has not got the maximum number of valid votes.

The petitioner, an advocate by profession, sought a declaration of rival BJP candidate, A Manju, as the winner for having secured the maximum number of valid votes.

A separate appeal was earlier filed by Mr Manju against the High Court order and the top court had already issued notice to the retuned candidate on that.

Mr Manju had challenged the 2019 election of Mr Prajwal on the ground that there was allegedly non-disclosure of assets held by him in his election affidavit.

Mr Prajwal was declared winner with 6,76,606 votes. Mr Manju came first runner-up with 5,35,282 votes.
