Six policemen injured as Omni crashes into tempo

Mangalore, April 25: Six policemen were injured when the Maruti Omni in which they were travelling rammed into the backside of a tempo that was moving in the same direction at Gurupur near here on Wednesday.

Among the injured the condition of ASI Madhava is said to be critical. Head Constable Duggappa and constables Honnappa, Mamatha, Radhakrishan and Dharmapala have also injured.

All the police personnel are attached Puttur town police station.

The severity of the accident was such that the front portion of the Omni is completely damaged.

The accident occurred around 7:00 am when the policemen were on their way to Moodushedde from Puttur to participate in a firing training.

It is learnt that the driver of the Omni lost control over his vehicle when the tempo driver suddenly applied breaks without any indication.

A case has been registered at Bajpe police station.

Mangaluru, Jun 13: A bus agent died after the compound wall of his house collapsed on him at Matadagudde, near Gurupura-Kaikamba, on Friday afternoon. This is the first rain-related death reported in Dakshina Kannada.

The victim is Narayana Naika, 52. According to police, heavy rain on Friday afternoon blocked a small water stream adjacent to his compound wall, and the deceased was clearing it. The stone compound wall then suddenly collapsed on him, and he got buried underneath. He sustained grievous head injuries and died on the way to hospital.

Narayana is survived by his wife and two children.

Dakshina Kannada received an average rainfall of 26.1mm in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday. The highest rainfall was recorded at Puttur and Mangaluru taluks at 31.3mm and 30.3mm, respectively. Bantwal and Sullia taluks received 26.3mm and 24.6mm of rain, respectively.

Bengaluru, Feb 18: Passengers of the Ahmedabad bound GoAir flight had a providential escape when the engine of the aircraft while on the roll of take-off hit by a foreign object at the Kempe Gowda Bengaluru International Airport on Tuesday.

'The right engine of GoAir flight G8 802 from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru is suspected to have suffered from foreign object damage (FOD) while on take-off roll,' an official statement said.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A 27-year-old man, who died of breathing problem at Banglagudda in Surathkal, has tested negative for COVID-19.

The entire area was panic-stricken following his death on Tuesday evening. Suspecting COVID-19, his throat swab samples were collected, said Mangaluru North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty. Now the test has proved he was negative for coronavirus.

The youth had collapsed suddenly on Tuesday evening and was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
