Eight killed as MSEZ pickup plunges into gorge in Jokatte

Mangalore, May 6: At least eight people were killed and several others sustained severe injuries when an open-pickup van fell into a gorge at Jokatte on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

The ghastly accident occurred around 2 pm when the labourers belonging to Mangalore Special Economic Zone were being taken to worksite.

Five labourers and the driver died on spot when the ill-fated vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down, sources said. Two more labourers succumbed to their injuries at a private hospital.

The injured labourers, who have been admitted to AJ Hospital in the city, informed that the driver Krishna, a resident of Porkodi, lost control over his vehicle while negotiating a curve.

“The vehicle rolled over three times before falling into the 15-ft gorge”, said one of the injured.

Sources said that all the victims were from the North Indian states of Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. However, police have yet to ascertain their identity.

The intensity of the accident was such that the pickup has been completely damaged.

Sources said that MSEZ transporting labourer in the vehicle, which was meant for transporting goods.

Angered by the incident, the local residents at Jokatte pelted stones at another vehicle belonging to MSEZ, it is said.


The MSEZ has employed around 25,000 labourers for civil and other construction work.

Sleuths attached to jurisdictional Panambur police station rushed to the spot.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka has said that state was prepared to tackle COVID-19 and flood situation.

"Today I had a meeting with officials from disaster management, housing, Police, agriculture departments. The government is ready to tackle both the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the flood situation," he told news agency.

The minister said he had held a meeting with officials to take precautionary measures.
"I sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the Fire Department to purchase the equipment for rescue operations. I have already announced red alert in six districts. Tomorrow, I will visit Kodagu, Chikmagalur to assess rescue operations. NDRF reached have teams for rescue operations," he said.

"We are monitoring all dams. Last time we got more floods because of dams. I have instructed to all district collectors that 70 per cent water be filled in dams. Remaining water be sent to canals. We are expecting more rains in nine districts this year," he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: After fake sanitisers and masks, Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have busted another racket and seized fake thermometers worth Rs 8 lakh, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Based on credible information, police conducted the raid on Prajval Surgical and Scientific store located on the first floor of a commercial building in the first block, Rajajinagar. They arrested store manager Keshavan N, 32, a resident of Kurubarahalli.

The police have seized 70 fake infrared forehead thermometers and 60 batteries used in these thermometers. They were worth around Rs 8 lakh as per the price they charged customers for each thermometer.

Bengaluru, Mar 20: Two COVID-19 positive patients in Karnataka have fully recovered and will be discharged today.

Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said: "Two COVID-19 positive patients have completely recovered and will be discharged tomorrow. They will be kept under home quarantine for 14 days as a precautionary measure."

The number of COVID-19 positive patients in Karnataka stands at 14 as of today.

"The total number of positive cases of COVID19 in India stands at 173, including 25 foreigners. Four deaths (1 each) have occurred in Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra," said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in a statement.

According to official data provided by the Ministry of Health, as many as 15 people infected with the virus have been discharged after receiving treatment.
