Christians to get waiver on home loan

Mangalore, May 10: Members of Christian community in Dakshina Kannada, who have borrowed money from public sector banks to build houses, will get an interest waiver upto Rs 1 lakh under the state government's Christian Development Scheme.

Interest accumulated after 2007 will be paid under the scheme to the bank directly through Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation (KMDC) Limited. KMDC chairman NB Aboobakkar told reporters here that the amount will be paid as a grant-in-aid and beneficiaries are not liable to pay back.

“Christian families, who have an annual income of less than Rs 1.5 lakh,can avail the benefits under the scheme. A total of Rs 1.23 crore has been earmarked to help 164 beneficiaries in Dakshina Kannada district, who have borrowed a minimum of Rs 1 lakh and a maximum of Rs 5 lakh to build houses,” he added.

KMDC has a target of distributing benefits to the tune of Rs 10.71 crore under various schemes to 5,771 minority community members in the district.

Scheme benefits worth Rs 3.68 crore will be distributed to 1,799 Christian community members under the Christian Development Scheme of the government.

Mangalore, Mar 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Home Guards felicitated social activist and Executive Director of Centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal at the Home Guards district office to mark the International Women's Day recently.

She was recognised for her achievements and contributions to the society in the field of education, culture and mental health.

Sachitha Nandagopal, a former Head of Department of Journalism at Besant Women's College and Principal of CMR Post Graduate Centre for Media Studies, Bangalore, is the Co-Founder of Centre for Integrated Learning, Mangalore which is an NGO working in the field of alternative education, adding value to the present education system. As a Facilitator in Dance Movement Therapy, she has founded Anveshanam - Centre for Mindfulness and Emotional Wellbeing, an organisation dedicated to addressing mental health issues.

She was honoured by District Commandant, Dakshina Kannada Home Guards, Dr. Muralimohan Chunthar. Senior Home Guard Ramesh Bhandary, Diwakar, Mahesh and lady personnel of Home Guards were present on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Apr 20: Close on the heels of the Padarayanapura vandalism, Karnataka Cabinet on Monday decided to promulgate an ordinance that gives special powers to implementing authority and also provide protection to frontline health workers.

Briefing media after the Cabinet meeting here, Minister for Law J C Madhuswamy said that the ordinance will be on the lines of one promulgated by Kerala and Uttar Pradesh governments.

“Through the ordinance, a State Epidemic Act will be enacted to protect health workers and any non-cooperation will be punishable. Also, any attempt to deliberately spread the disease or float rumours will attract action,” he added.

Udupi, Jul 21: Udupi Court complex has been sealed down for two days for sanitisation after a judge tested positive for Covid-19, a source said on Tuesday.

The Covid cases in Udupi district which had reduced recently are once again seeing a spurt. On Monday, as many as 98 have tested positive taking the total cases in the district to 2,321.
