Four-wheelers get May 31 deadline to remove windscreen tints

Mangalore, May 16: Following the Supreme Court's order on prohibiting poor visual light transmitting (VLT) glasses and the use of black tints on front, rear and side windscreens of four-wheelers, Karnataka Police of western range has fixed May 31 as the deadline.

The Police Department which is involved in creating awareness on the SC's orders will begin levying penalty from June 1. They will inform all vehicle drivers and owners to remove black tints on their vehicles windscreens immediately, since the SC has suggested the operation to begin from May 4 itself.

Inspector General of Police (western range) Pratap Reddy said the vehicle owners and drivers will have time up to May 31 to remove the tints. “The relaxation is provided to create awareness on the SC's order,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said that the police will penalize vehicle owners and may also seize vehicles in case of violation after June 1.

According to the SC's order, using tints of any percentage of VLT on safety glasses, windscreen is prohibited, The order, which differentiates the tinted glasses and the black film glasses, describes that tinted glasses must have 70 percent VLT in case of front and rear screens and 40 per cent VLT on side screens.

The order explains that tinted glasses are later coated with black films which make it illegal. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) D Dharmaiah said that his department is involved in creating awareness among the public. “The police will instruct vehicle owners to remove films on the windscreen,” he added. He informed that his department will use professionals to detect the percentage of VLT until Luxmetres are sanctioned for the department.

DCP Dharmaiah said that the traffic police will warn vehicles owners until the deadline.

Bengaluru, May 22: Uber said on Friday it has resumed its operations in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Hubballi, in compliance with Lockdown 4.0 guidelines issued by the Government.

Riders in Bengaluru can book UberAuto, UberGO, Premier, Intercity, Hourly Rental, UberXL, Access, and Assist on their Uber App.

UberAuto, UberGO, Premier, and Intercity are available in Mysuru, UberGO and Intercity services in Mangaluru, and UberAuto services in Hubballi.

Uber Intercity operations will be limited to travel with necessary authorisation and within state boundaries and permissible zones only, the company said in a statement.

Uber said it has launched comprehensive measures such as the distribution of PPE kits, including masks, sanitisers and disinfectants to drivers and the introduction of mandatory educational video courses for them.

Bengaluru, May 21: With temples yet to open for devotees as coronavirus restrictions are in place, the Karnataka government is preparing for live streaming of sevas (service) and poojas offered to deities at temples that comes under the state's Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Department.

The government has also decided to develop an app and web-based software with an intention to provide information to devotees regarding temples, also to facilitate online donations and advance booking for various sevas offered there.

Regarding online live streaming, Commissioner of the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Department has written to the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts and Executive Officers seeking a list of temples that comes under their jurisdiction where such facility can be provided.

"It has been intended to do online live streaming of sevas and pooja rituals at temples that come under the department in the backdrop of COVID-19 crisis. In this regard it is requested to provide a list of temples where online live facility can be provided to devotees, by abiding the traditions and practices of the temple," the letter said.

Though the temples are holding daily poojas and rituals, they are not open to public for now, with COVID-19 induced lockdown restrictions in place.

Officials had recently had stated that the department was planning to have a standard operating procedure (SOP) in place, that needs to be followed at temples in a post lockdown scenario, once they are opened for the public.

There are over 34,000 temples in the state that come under the department.

Meanwhile, in another letter to DCs of 15 districts, also Executive officers and administrators of 'A' grade temples, aimed at development of app and web-based software, the Commissioner has sought information regarding sevas offered at temples in their jurisdictions and those sevas for which option can be provided for devotees to do advance booking.

Bengaluru, Aug 5: The Janata Dal (Secular) will contest all the 243 assembly seats in Bihar, the elections for which are due in October-November this year, its state unit chief Haldhar Kant Mishra announced on Tuesday.

Mishra said party supremo Deve Gowda has asked him to expand JD(S)'s base and also to prepare itself for contesting all the constituencies in view of the zeal and enthusiasm shown by party workers and office-bearers.

Deve Gowda announced the decision during a virtual meeting with presidents of party's various cells and office- bearers, he said.

He assured that the party will provide all kinds of support for its expansion and selection of candidates for the Bihar polls, Mishra said.

The former prime minister told the party functionaries that several leaders from Bihar are in touch with him and they will join the JD(S) to play their part in the elections, he added.
