In a press release, DYFI District President Muneer Katipalla has said that the DYFI condemns Mangalore University VC Dr T C Shivashankarmurthy's move of writing a letter to the court informing about the attendance shortage, though the court had not asked for it. The University has the right to grant opportunity for the student to write exam if the student could not attend the classes due to accident, illness etc.
University student Vittal was arrested by the police on March 3, on charges of supporting naxals. He was arrested when he had gone home to help his father who was beaten by the police. Despite the Department Head Dr Waheeda Sultana certifying that Vittal has the attendance of 89 per cent before the arrest, the University has not considered it and the situations that caused him to stay away from the classes later.
The VC should have considered his case as special case and should have allowed him to write the exam, stated the release. They have further stated that a complaint will be submitted to the Governor and protest will be staged in front of the University soon.
