Mangalore, May 25: Forest officials of Bangalore CID Friday seized 67 turtles worth Rs 6 lakhs and arrested a man for illegally possessing the endangered amphibians.
The arrested is Bondel resident Rohison Wilson D'Souza. CID Forest Squad headed by PSI B Radu arrested him at Koolur Rathna Sharaton hotel here.
He was later handed over to Kavoor Police, who produced him before a local court. He was remanded to judicial custody till Monday.
He was arrested under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. According to the Act, the offender would be subjected to undergo a maximum of seven years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 25,000.
Turtles are listed as endangered and protected under the act and their capture or killing is an offence under the law.
