Mangalore, May 26: Dakshina Kannada district unit of National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation organised a training camp for human rights activists on Saturday here.
Speaking on the occasion Mangalore Bar Council President S P Chengappa voiced concern over the increasing violence against human rights activists across the world.
“Human rights defenders have become the easy target of murders. In recent years large a number of such activists have been killed for no fault of theirs”, he said.
Though the concept of human right was there since the time immemorial, it was only in 19th century a collective awakening about human rights was founded. However the recent attacks on human rights activists are a disheartening development, said Mr Chengappa.
“There is no protection for those who raise voice for the protection of human rights”, he lamented.
In the early decades of 19th century the violation of human rights had reached its heights. At this juncture the protection of human rights became a cause for a systematic struggle, he recalled.
He said that the capitalist lobby had prevented poor students from entering into the field of medicine. Students right to education have been curbed by increasing the fees of medical courses, he said.
He also said that despite the order from Supreme Court vested interests are trying to prevent the implementation of right to education act. Besides there has been systematic effort to curb the right to information, he added.
