Bhatkal, May 30: Omega Hospital has been directed by the Karnataka High Court to pay a compensation of Rs. 17.5 lakhs to the family of Muhammad Ashraf of Bhatkal, who lost his mental stability following negligence from doctors of the hospital ten years ago.
In 2002, Mr. Ashraf had approached Dr. Mukund of Omega Hospital, Mangalore, with complaints of chest pain. On September 15 that year, as per the directions of Dr. Mukund, a team of doctors including Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr A J Jayakrishna, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Jithendra Kumar Rathod and Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr Gopal Kumar operated upon Mr. Ashraf for a heart surgery.
Owing to improper monitoring of the heart and lung apparatus used by the hospital, it was later found out that Mr. Ashraf's brain had become dead due to lack of oxygen supply.
Shocked by the negligence of the hospital authorities, Mr. Ashraf's wife filed a police complaint and also approached the Dakshina Kannda District Consumer Disputes Redressel Forum. The Forum directed the Hospital to pay a compensation of Rs. 15 lakhs to the victim's family but the Hospital chose to approach the Court.
The High Court however, has ordered the Hospital to pay a compensation of Rs. 17.5 lakhs to Mr. Ashraf's family.
