Number of tobacco victims increasing'

Udupi, June 1: Tobacco consumption can be reduced by creating awareness among public, opined District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy.

Addressing a gathering after the district-level inauguration of 'World No Tobacco Day' at City Hospital Auditorium, he said that tobacco kills nearly six million people every year. He said that the number of tobacco victims is increasing and it may rise to eight million by 2030.

Stating that large numbers of women are becoming the prey of consuming tobacco in the form of beedi and cigarette, Bairy said tobacco consumption makes human anaemic, besides making him the victim of oral cancer and gangrene that ultimately leads to death.

He stressed the need for all cigarette companies to display the statutory warnings on all brands of cigarettes. They should also mention the after effects of high nicotine content on the packet. Tobacco Regulation Act prohibits smoking in public places and the legislation is in force. He also said there is a need for stringent measures banning children below 18 years of age from smoking.

The programme was jointly organised by Zilla Panchayat, Health and Family Welfare Department, State Tobacco Regulatory Board, City Hospital and Archana Chartable Trust.

Lucknow, Feb 24: The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board on Monday accepted the five acres of land provided for construction of the mosque in Ayodhya.

The Board also decided to form a trust to oversee the construction of the mosque.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by the Board's Chairman Zufar Faruqui.

Apart from this, the trust will also construct a charitable hospital, public library and a centre showcasing the heritage of Indo-Islamic civilisation which will also serve as a research and study centre for the same, according to a press release by the board.

The appointment of members to the trust will be announced following its creation, the release added.

The Supreme Court had on November 9 last year directed the Central government to hand over the disputed site at Ayodhya for the construction of a temple and set up a trust for the same.

The apex court had further directed the government to allocate an alternative five acres of land at a prominent location in Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque to the Sunni Waqf Board.

Bengaluru, Feb 28: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Friday said that Section 144 will be imposed near Vidhana Soudha for Budget session starting from March 2.

"Section 144 of the CrPC (prohibits assembly of more than 4 people in an area) will be imposed in the area around Vidhana Soudha from March 2 to March 31 ahead of the Budget session,"Bhaskar Rao said.

The police said that they have intelligence inputs of protests near Vidhana Soudha.

Udupi, June 21: A graduation student, who had attempted suicide two weeks ago under depression following the postponement of examinations due to covid-19, breathed his last at a private hospital yesterday. 

The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala, a final year degree student of First Grade College, Muniyal. She was a resident of Mathibettu near Vagranga in Hebri taluk. 

According to sources, she had studied hard to clear the examinations. The postponement of examinations led her to depression.  

She consumed poison at her house on June 8. She was immediately rushed to Manipal hospital where she breathed her last on June 20. A case has been registered in Hebri Police Station.
