Mangalore, June 1: Rahim Uchil, President of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy, has resumed official duty with police protection at the Academy after recovering from the lethal injuries following a murder attempt at the same office about two and a half months ago.

Addressing media persons at a press meet in the Academy office in Mangalore on Friday, Mr. Uchil said that he has been offered police protection by City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh for a few more days.

Stating that he had been offered security by the Commissioner earlier too following a threat call from a certain organisation, Mr. Uchil said that he had never expected a murder bid on him. “I had received a threat call from members of a certain organisation asking me to quit BJP and resign as President of the Academy. They said I had been putting my community to shame and that they will give me a week's time and then a fortnight's time and so on. The Police offered me security but I denied it myself saying that I have not committed any mistake as serious as one deserving a murder attempt. But after the attack took place, I have had sleepless nights thinking as to what wrong have I done that a murder attempt was made on me”, Mr. Uchil said.

Reiterating that apart from members of a certain organisation having affiliation to a certain political party, representatives from all political parties had come to see him in the hospital after the attack, Mr. Uchil said that the same organisation may have planned his attack.

“Eight people have been figured out by the police who have affiliations to a certain organisation but since the attack was well planned, they have managed to escape from the state. The police is carrying out a fair investigation at inter-state level”, he said.

Recited Kalima 16 times

Recalling the attack on him in his office on March 15, Mr. Uchil said that two people entered his cabin when no staff were around and started attacking him with a sword. “I lost my finger in a bid to protect myself and my other arm was also injured. I fell on the ground reciting the 'kalima'. The assaulters were Muslims and every time I repeated the 'kalima' they kept attacking me further because they wanted me to stop saying it. I recited the 'kalima' about 16 times and stopped, and assuming I had died, they left the scene”, Mr. Uchil said.

However, Mr. Uchil maintained that the intent of murder continues to remain a mystery. “It is not necessary that if some people have affiliations to a certain organisation that organisation is behind it. We do not know whether they were used by some other forces. Also, there are chances that some internal forces are responsible”, he said.

When media persons asked which organisation he was referring to, Mr. Uchil said “KFD”. When pointed out that KFD does not exist anymore, Mr. Uchil said “Although the state government has banned it, its members still identify themselves as KFD”.

“BJP did not desert me”

Mr. Uchil also said that the BJP had not deserted him in the tough times he faced. “My party did not desert me. The Chief Minister came to see me and party members kept taking care of my needs”, he said.

The CM has assured that more grants would be given to the Academy and has asked for a land to be identified for the construction of 'Beary Bhavana', Mr. Uchil said. The new standing committee for the Academy will also be formed soon, he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday demanded that BS Yediyurappa-led government should cut down on 'unnecessary' expenditures to mobilise funds to fight against coronavirus.

"Yediyurappa government needs to cut down on unwanted expenses which government is spending on several things in order to save the taxpayers money to fight against coronavirus," said Siddaramaiah here in a press conference.

He alleged that the ruling state government is indulged in corruption due to which the government is running bankrupt, adding that instead of mobilising funds, Yediyurappa government is only concentrating on auction of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) sites.
Siddaramaiah claimed that the "BDA was already in loss".

"The present government does not have money due to its involvement in corruption. The Karnataka government must concentrate on cutting expenses and there is no need to waste money on unwanted things including vehicles for board and corporations chiefs," said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

"Yediyurappa government has decided to auction more than 12,000 BDA sites to get benefit of Rs 15,000 crore, rather than fullfiling requirements of people of the state at the time of coronavirus crisis," he said.

In Karnataka, 247 people have tested positive for coronavirus, including 59 cured and discharged and 6 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry.

With the steep hike in excise duty in the past couple of months, an average consumer of petrol now pays over 275% in taxes to centre and states on a litre of the fuel.  The base price of petrol is just about Rs 18. The taxes are close to Rs 50 and the pump price is over Rs 72.

India imports 85% of all its crude oil demand.  After a steep hike in excise duty in the past two months despite a hold on daily price revisions by the oil public sector undertakings (PSUs), Indian consumers now pay 275% collectively in excise duty to state and centre.

The central government hiked excise on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 and Rs 13 respectively last month. The excise duty on petrol is taxed around Rs 33-a-litre while the same on diesel it is Rs 32.

The Value-Added Tax (VAT) on both petrol and diesel is Rs 16.44 and Rs 16.26 respectively. Both the taxes together are around Rs 49 while it is sold at petrol pumps at 73-per-litre.

These two taxes cumulatively account for 69% of tax which is higher than anywhere else in the world. The same is taxed at 19% in the US, 47% in Japan, UK 62% and 63% in France. The government does not pass on the benefit of lower crude oil prices to the customer.

It is to be noted that Indian consumers continued to pay Rs 70-a-litre even when crude oil prices hit a paltry US $ 20-a-barrel on April 12.

Former finance minister and Congress leader recently took a jab at the Centre over rising prices stating, “Fuel selling prices raised twice in two days, following tax hikes two weeks ago. This time to benefit oil companies. Government is poor, it needs more taxes. Oil companies are poor, they need better prices. Only the poor and middle class are not poor, so they will pay”.

Mysuru, May 15: The Temple Town of Nanjangud was till now treated as one unit or a Cluster Containment Zone and was put under complete lock-down as per the containment protocol listed under COVID-19 regulations and Disaster Management Act, 2005.

However on Friday, some of the restrictions have been lifted by Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar who permitted certain activities as no fresh positive cases were reported from the cluster area. The Cluster Containment Zone was declared on March 29 following one employee of Nanjangud-based Jubilant Generics tested positive for the killer Coronavirus. As there were chances of the positive person spreading the disease to other employees of the factory, the cluster rules were enforced. Moreover, there were over 1,000 employees in the Pharma Company and a majority of them lived in and around Nanjangud.

The declaration of Cluster Containment Zone with complete lock-down and quarantining of all the Pharma Company employees proved a success to the District Administration as whoever tested positive – over 73 were later tested positive — had already been quarantined and the dangerous community spread phase was successfully prevented. To a major extent, the Corona virus curve has been flattened. As such, restrictions have been relaxed a bit on Friday.
