Special ritual for rain: Baby frogs named after 'Maleraya'

Udupi, June 2: A team headed by Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samithi Secretary Nithyanand Volakadu on Saturday performed a cradling cum naming ceremony to frogs, seeking the grace of rain god.

It is to be noted here that Volakadu had organised the wedding of frogs in 2008, their 'seematha' in 2009 praying for early showers.

Volakadu, who is popularly known for his Vatal Nagaraj like protests and events, along with social activists Ramadevi, Ganesh Raj Saralebettu and others organised this naming ceremony at the Kediyoor Hotel premises.

They placed as many as six baby frogs in the decorated cradle and named them as 'Maleraya'. The event concluded with a lady whispering the name 'Maleraya' in a frog's ear.

Udupi, Mar 1: Acting on credible information, Udupi district police arrested five persons and seized 1.35 kg of crude gold worth Rs 56.99 lakh from the possession of the accused, custom department said on Sunday.

A case has been registered against four people at Kundapur and one at Byndoor on charges of gold smuggling. The accused were transporting gold from Calicut to Bhatkal, informed Joannes George, joint Commissioner of Customs.

Off these five accused, four persons were held at Kundapur, while other at Byndoor on Saturday evening.

Mangaluru, Feb 20: A wild tusker was spotted in Kukke Subrahmanya town here, in the early hours of Thursday.

Range Forest Officer (RFO), Kukke Subrahmanya Tyagaraj said that it was seen walking from Kashi Kattte in the town to Nuchila around 0530 hours without creating any havoc.

The same elephant was spotted some days ago at Harihara, a small village town near Kukke Subrahmanya.

It has been roaming around in the forests nearby for some time now. So far, it had not caused disturbance to people nor had it damaged any property, Mr. Tyagaraj said.

Kukke Subrahmanya is on the foot of the Western Ghats.

Bengaluru, Feb 18: Passengers of the Ahmedabad bound GoAir flight had a providential escape when the engine of the aircraft while on the roll of take-off hit by a foreign object at the Kempe Gowda Bengaluru International Airport on Tuesday.

'The right engine of GoAir flight G8 802 from Ahmedabad to Bengaluru is suspected to have suffered from foreign object damage (FOD) while on take-off roll,' an official statement said.
