Crime victims can claim compensation: SP

Mangalore, June 3: Crime victims can now claim compensation as per the Karnataka Victims Compensation Scheme, said Abhishek Goyal, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dakshina Kannada district.

The SP made this announcement at the monthly SC/ST grievance meeting held at his office in Mangalore on Sunday.

Victims of crimes that include physical injury are eligible for compensation under the scheme, Mr. Goyal brought to the notice of the gathering present at the meet.

Under the scheme, victims of crime will be eligible to claim compensation ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 2 lakh. Compensation could be claimed for as many as 30 types of offences including murder, rape, assault, manslaughter, dowry death, and sexual harassment. There should be evident signs of physical injury to the victim to be eligible for the compensation. The scheme however, does not include accidents and robbery, Mr. Goyal said.

To claim compensation, the victims are required to file applications with the District Legal Services Authority backed by a certificate from the police, the SP said.

'Reopen Shivappa Bangera murder case'

Shivappa R, State President, Ambedkar Pratishthana, raised the issue of re-opening the unsolved murder case of Shivappa Bangera, a Mangalore University employee who was murdered in 2001.

Mr. Bangera was the President of Dalit Workers' Association of the University.

Following his murder, a case was registered at Bantwal Rural police station. But due to lack of evidence and witnesses, the case was closed with the acknowledgement of the court.


Mr. Sivappa R, however, alleged that the case was brushed under the carpet because of political interference and appealed to the SP to reopen the case.

In response, Mr. Goyal asked Mr. Shivappa if he had any evidence, witness or lead to carry the investigation further. Re-opening the case would require court's permission and without solid proof, it would be difficult. In case there is any lead, evidence or witness, it would be considered, and if necessary, the case can be re-opened, Mr. Goyal told Mr. Shivappa.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: A total of 5,483 new COVID-19 cases and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Friday.

Karnataka now has a total of 1,24,115 coronavirus cases, including 72,005 active cases and 49,788 discharges.
So far, 2,134 deaths have been reported from the state.

Meanwhile, India reported the highest single-day spike of 55,079 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, crossing the 16-lakh mark, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Friday.

Bengaluru, Jan 11: India’s second-biggest IT company, Infosys Ltd, said it found no evidence of financial misconduct by its executives following a investigation into whistleblower complaints.

Bengaluru-headquartered Infosys, which earlier on Friday raised its revenue forecasts due to upbeat demand from Western clients, said an audit committee report exonerated Chief Executive Officer Salil Parekh and Chief Financial Officer Nilanjan Roy of all allegations, including accusations that the duo prevented employees from presenting data on large deals.

“I’m very happy that CEO Salil Parekh and CFO Nilanjan Roy have emerged from this stronger,” Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani told reporters. “The last two years since Salil has been here the company has changed dramatically for the better.”

Parekh took over as Infosys CEO in January 2018, after his predecessor Vishal Sikka quit following a public row with the company’s founder executives amid whistleblower allegations of wrongdoing.

The company earlier said it expected revenue to grow between 10 per cent and 10.5 per cent on a constant currency basis in the year ending March 2020, compared with its previous forecast of between 9 per cent and 10 per cent.

“We continue to see momentum in the market and we have an extremely robust pipeline driven by segment leaders,” CEO Parekh told a news conference.

“With the strength of large deal wins and digital momentum, we were able to clearly see that we have support to raise our guidance.”

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramalu on Monday confirmed that there are 27 positive coronavirus cases in the state so far.

A fresh COVID-19 positive case has been reported from Mysore today.

"One hospital in every district is dedicated to COVID-19 treatment. We have placed an order for 1000 ventilators. We have also ordered 10 lakh N90 mask, five lakh PPE testing kits, 15 lakh three-layer masks. Sanitizers and thermal scanners will also be purchased on-demand," said Sriramalu while addressing a press conference here.

The Karnataka Health Minister said that decision will also be taken to purchase lab testing kits and equipment.

Meanwhile, Dr Ashwath Marayan, Deputy Chief Minister, Karnataka said that all necessary measures are being taken to contain the spread of COVID-19.

"We will take important decisions as soon as possible. 80 per cent of the companies are following work from home. Critical and essential things should be provided in this situation and we have kept them available to serve the people," said Marayan.

"We have taken all the required decisions including the logistics and supply. Social distancing is much important and we will implement it," he added.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases in the country mounts at 415, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
