Large quantity of rice, food grains, pulses and cashew nuts was destroyed in the fire, which broke out in the wee hours.
Within an hour two refrigerators and furniture including cupboards were also gutted in fire. Besides, several important documents and currency notes up to Rs 5000 were also destroyed.
It is learnt that a tempo driver, who noticed the smoke coming out of the shop around 3:00 am, immediately informed the owner of the shop.
However, due to the delay in the arrival of fire fighters from Bantwal, the building was completely gutted. The flames were so powerful that local residents could not douse it.
It is suspected the fire broke out following a short circuit in the electric wiring. One A M Abubakkar was running the grocery shop in the building belonged to Mahammad, resident of Kuddupadavu.
