The deceased have been identified as Sandhya Bhat (40), and her children Vedya (20), Harigovind (15) and Vimala (12). All three children were students.
Police are of the suspicion that Sandhya's husband Venkataramana Bhat might have hacked his wife and children to death last night using a sharp weapon.
The residents of Kukkur in Bettampady village of the taluk, who noticed the mutilated bodies inside the house on Thursday, immediately informed the police, who rushed the spot. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were also pressed into action.
The main suspect Venkataramana has fled the place. Sources said that police have already launched a man hunt to trace him.
It is learnt that a couple of weeks ago Venakataramana had lodged a complaint with jurisdictional police station stating that a group of robbers broke into his house and made away with valuables. However, police had expressed suspicions over his claims.
It can also be recalled here that last year same Venkataramana had called a press meet in Puttur Press Club to inform media persons that he had discovered a new machine to extract water from the earth using gravity power. However, later his claims were proven false.
