Thieves target jewellery store, wine shop amidst heavy rains

Mangalore, June 18: In a rainy night serial theft, unknown culprits broke into a jewellery shop and a wine shop at Bantwal near here and fled with cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs 6 lakh.

Burglars gained entry into Vaibhav Jewellery in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday and decamped with one-and-a-half kg of new silver ornaments, two kgs of old silver ornaments and a cash amount of Rs 1.50 lakh.

They also were able to enter Rajesh Wine Shop, from where they stole several branded liquor bottles worth approximately Rs 20,000.

The thefts came to light on Monday morning and police said that the miscreants had come in a vehicle.

Police suspect that domestic helps or some people who were well aware about the daily routine of all people whose shops were burgled may be involved.

"We are questioning some domestic helps and other people staying in the area to get more clues," an official said.

Police believe that the thefts are a handiwork of one gang.

Mangaluru, May 13: Kinz Foundation started distributing around 1500 food packets daily for migrant workers migrating in different parts of Dakshina Kannada district amidst coastal coronavirus lockdown.

"We are distributing daily 1,500 food packets both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The number will be increased to 5,000," said businessman Althaf Hussain who arranged food packets on May 13.

"These are trying times. The poor migrants who are being denied of their bread due to the lockdown deserve help and we are trying to bring them food which is most basic needs.” he added.

Dubai, Apr 18: A 47-year-old Indian worker has allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of a building here, according to a media report.

Ashokan Purushotaman, a native of Kollam in Kerala, cut the arteries in his legs and jumped from the third floor of a building in the city's Jebel Ali area on Friday, the Gulf News reported.

Purushotaman succumbed to his injuries in Rashid Hospital.

Meanwhile, Dubai Police has rejected reports that Purushotaman killed himself because he had coronavirus. Personal reasons were cited as the cause for suicide.

“His suicide is not related to COVID-19. The building is clean and there are no infection cases there. He committed suicide due to personal reasons,” director of Jebel Ali police station Brigaider Adel Al Suwaidi told the Gulf News.

Consul-General of India Vipul confirmed Purushotaman's death. “We are yet to get more information. Considering the death was of unnatural circumstances, authorities will conduct due forensic tests and provide us with more details," Vipul told the daily.

Udupi, Jun 9: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary School S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of either postponing or cancelling SSLC exam in the State and it will start from June 25 as scheduled.

Replying to a question, the Minister said that Telangana and Tamil Nadu States might have cancelled the SSLC exam, but Karnataka will not follow them. "Will hold the examination from June 25 to July 4 by taking all care to protect the interests of the Children.

The SSLC exam was originally scheduled for March 27, but was postponed as lockdown was clamped following the spread of killer Coronavirus.
