Mangalore, June 24: A man, who said no to his would-be wife just a day before marriage citing her staying in touch with another man, has been taken into custody by Pandeshwar police.

Deepak, a software engineer from Kinnigoli had got engaged to a girl from Bappal, serving as a lecturer in a College in Mangalore, two months ago. It is said that the girl was approached by Deepak's family. After talks, they got engaged and even went on a tour to Mysore and Bangalore together. Deepak would frequently visit her house and she would share various things with him. She had given him her e-mail and Facebook details as well.

A developer by name Megharaj, who stays in the neighbourhood of the girl's house, had approached her family to ask her hand in marriage some three months ago. But owing to some differences in the communities that they belonged to, he was given a negative response from the girl's family. Deepak had later made a telephone call to the girl expressing his desire to get married to her but she gave a similar reply. The girl had informed about this incident to Deepak who is said to have told her then that it was not a big deal.

But then as the marriage date inched closer, much to the surprise and shock of the girl and her family, Deepak said that he is not willing to marry the girl stating that she has been getting phone calls from other men. The girl's family was visibly annoyed with Deepak's sudden change of mind as invitation cards had already been distributed and with just hours to go for the wedding, all arrangements had been in place.

The matter was then taken to police station. On enquiry, Deepak told the police that he is not willing to marry the girl as she gets phone calls from other men. He even threatened to commit suicide if he is forced to marry her. On the other hand, Megharaj admitted to having made a phone call to the girl asking her hand in marriage. However, after she said no, he said he had forgotten her. The police who registered a case, have now taken Deepak into custody.
