
The accident occurred around 11:00 am, when the driver of 'Maroli Travels' bus on rout number 43A plying towards Talapady from the city was trying to overtake another speeding bus.
Two among the injured whose condition is said to be critical have been admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore. The other injured passengers have been undergoing treatment at Fr Mullar Hospital in Mangalore, Sahara Hospital and Netaji Yellappa Hospital in Thokkottu.
Driver Krishna Shetty Talapady and conductor Suresh were also among the injured.
A passenger, who escaped unhurt in the accident, said that two buses were competing with each other on the road for a few munities, which led to the mishap.
“It could have been catastrophic if the bus slammed into the live electric pole situated a couple of feet away”, he said.
The long skid marks left on the edge of the road is a proof for the rash driving of the driver, said a police constable on the spot.
The impact of the accident was such that the front portion of the bus was complete damaged.
