Growing drug menace in M'lore needs to be checked'

Mangalore, June 28: The spread of the menace of drugs and narcotics in the state is as serious a threat as terrorism said Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

He was addressing media persons at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday where he along with several other officials from various departments including police, environment, health, narcotics, district administration besides others, held a meeting to tackle the growing drugs menace besides other issues.

Mr. Bhat said that after discussions, a report will have to be made and submitted so that the issue could be brought up in the Assembly in the coming session and apt steps could be taken by the government.

Discussions on a range of issues concerning drug menace in the region including the check of drugs supply from Goa, Kerala and other places, enhancing dog squad services for drug detection etc besides proposals from the Narcotics and Health Deaprtments will be held, Mr. Bhat said.

Appachhu Ranjan, Madikeri MLA, said that Mangalore being an educational hub attracts students not just from Kodagu but from other parts of the world too. On the other hand, Mangalore stands second in the state as far as drug menace is concerned. Suggestions to control the menace will be considered so that apt steps are taken. Installing cameras in educational institutions is one option. Subjecting students to alcohol tests can also be considered as it will help in creating fear and awareness among the student community that would prompt them to stay away from narcotics, he said.

Compensation package for Malekudiyas

Mr. Bhat on the occasion said that the issue of providing suitable rehabilitation and compensation to Malekudiyas of Belthangady Taluk will is also being discussed.

“Rehabilitation and compensation for not just Malekudiyas but about 1400 families in the Western Ghats as a whole, is being discussed. No family would be forced to accept the compensations although we admit that in the past such instances have taken place. A report in this regard will be submitted jointly by the Revenue, Forest and Police Deaprtments as to what should be the compensation parameters”, Mr. Bhat said.

Lakya Dam

Mr. Bhat said that the officials will pay a visit to the Lakya dam site later this evening to see if the silt being deposited there could be used as an alternative for sand which is required for various purposes in the state.

The issue of arrangement of drinking water facility to Mangalore City Corporation without any objections from the Forest Department will also be addressed, he said.

NRI Habeeb Ur Rahiman Uppinangady conferred doctorate

Newsroom, Feb 10: Habeeb Ur Rahiman, a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration at Kingdom University Bahrain, has been awarded doctorate from the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi.

He has completed his thesis Influence of Quality of Work Life, Ego Status and Job Attitude on Organisational Commitment and Productivity of Bank Employees under the guidance of Prof Rashmi Kodikal.

Habeeb Ur Rahiman is the son of Yusuf and Ayisha couple from Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district.

After obtaining his Master Degree (MBA, Finance) from Visvesvaraya Technological University in 2012, he had worked in Bearys First Grade College, Kundapura and P A College of Engineering, Mangaluru before migrating to Bahrain.

Palghar lynching: Arnab Goswami booked for promoting enmity, defamation

Apr 23: An FIR has been registered in Nagpur against Republic TV channel's editor Arnab Goswami for promoting social disharmony and accusing Congress President Sonia Gandhi of orchestrating the Palghar lynching.

Three Mumbai residents, including two sadhus, who were on their way to Silvassa on April 16, were lynched by a mob in Gadakchinchale village of Palghar district on the suspicion that they were thieves. Nagpur Police Commissioner B K Upadhyaya said they received a complaint which was turned into an FIR at Sadar police station.

DCP Vinita Sahu said Goswami has been booked under sections 117 (abetting commission of offence by the public or by more than 10 persons), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153 (B) (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 290-A (public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the ipc. Another FIR was filed against him in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

In a statement condemning Goswami, Maharashtra Congress said the killing has been wrongly given a communal angle despite ample proof of the contrary. "At a time when country is fighting against coronavirus pandemic, it is very unfortunate that a section of media as well as politicians are trying to create social unrest... [and] spread racial and religious hatred in society. Goswami has tried to create misogyny against women in the society. He made an outrageous remark against the Congress president on a live TV programme. This is completely unethical journalism and we publicly protest it. We believe in brotherhood and cannot accept such animosity. This will be dangerous for the unity and integrity of the country (sic)," it said.

Karnataka hires 'Corona warriors' to provide real-time information, avoid fake news menace

Bengaluru, Mar 21: The news and public relations department, the Indian Red Cross Society and the Karnataka State Labour Studies Institute have invited volunteers for the programme to provide real-time information to people to avoid spreading rumours and misinformation about coronavirus.

This is an opportunity to join hands with the Karnataka government and fight coronavirus. These volunteers will be known as the "Corona Warriors", who will be entrusted with the job of monitoring social media sites to check rumours that are being spread across all taluks in the state. They will also take steps to provide proper information.

Applications are already being shared online and registered volunteers will be provided with appropriate training, security kits and identification cards at all district offices of the Department of Information and Public Relations.

At least four volunteers will work in four shifts per day in each taluk of the state. There are about 120 volunteers in Bengaluru city and about 3,000 Corona Warriors are expected to register from across the state. Over 400 volunteers have registered via online application on the first day.

Fifteen people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Friday.
