Two construction workers washed away by flashfloods

Bantwal, June 29: In a rain related mishap, two labourers who were working at the construction site of a dam on a stream in Kesottu in Vamadpadav near here were washed away by flashfloods on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Sumathi Shetty (40), a resident of Chennaithodi and Shekhar Poojary (38), a resident of Majalodi. The body of Shekhar was found a few meters away from the drowning spot, while the body of Sumathi was not traced even till night. Hence the residents have decided to carry out the search on Friday.

It is said that the deceased were trying to collect coconuts in the stream amidst the heavy rains.

Despite Gram Panchayat member Ramanand Sapalya who looks after the construction work of the dam directing the eight labourers to stop the work and go home on Thursday noon due to heavy rains, four people including Sumathi and Shekhar stayed back.

The four workers started to collect coconuts that flow along the rain water in the stream. At one point, Shekhar slipped and fell into water and Sumathi who tried to rescue him by lending her hand too drowned and died.

Hassan, May 8: A newly married couple accidentally fell into the Hemavathi river and drowned while clicking selfies near Henneli village in the district, police said on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Kritika (23) of the same village and Artheesh (27) of Belur taluk in the district.

They got married on March 20. Both were working in Bengaluru and were in the village due to the lockdown.

Byndoor, Jul 16: Byndoor Police Station in Kundapur taluk of Udupi District, has been sealed for the second time in a month, after three personnel including an ASI were tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.

All the three including a lady Home Guard have been admitted to the designated Covid Hospital.

Last month the Station was sealed after staff had tested positive.

Mysuru, Feb 26: Twenty-nine students of the Government Primary School fell sick after consuming milk supplied at the school on Wednesday morning at Kiranguru village, in Hanagodu hobli, in the hunsur taluk in the district.

Police said the students were immediately rushed to the primary health centre in Hanagodu and provided first aid.

Tahsildar and Police personnel visited the health centre and inquired about the health of the students. "All the students are responding to the treatment," sources said.
