Mangalore, July 2: Academy of Tenku Tittu Yakshagana (ATTY), Delhi, has selected veteran Yakshagana artiste Sampaje Sheenappa Rai for its annual Yaksha Kala Nidhi Award for 2012. The award ceremony will be held on July 8 at 2 p.m. in Town Hall.
V. Dhananjay Kumar, Special Representative of the Government of Karnataka in New Delhi, will be the chief guest and would confer the award on Mr. Rai. Artiste Soorikumeri Govinda Bhat would deliver the felicitation speech and Registrar of Mangalore University K. Chinnappa Gowda would preside.
Vidya Kolyur, Director of ATTY, told presspersons here on Friday that the academy had been honouring Yakshagana artistes since 2006 in order to preserve the art of coastal Yakshagana.
She said that Mr. Rai had been working in the field of Tenku Tittu for 56 years.
