Manipal, July 4: District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bairy said that 371 children up to six year old in the district are suffering of malnutrition.
Speaking to media persons in Udupi on Tuesday, the DHO said that out of the 371 kids suffering from malnutrition, about 280 are suffering from lack of nutritious food.
The remaining are suffering from the deficiency due to other health problems. These kids will be treated by the expert physicians. Among these kids, nine children belong to Koraga community and 13 belong to Kudubi community. The department will extend the check-ups to other children in the district too, said DHO.
Children will be tested to identify whether the malnutrition is due to insufficient food or due to other health problems.. Awareness programmes and check-ups to identify the affected children will be continued till July 7.
From July 8 to 9, children will be mobilized at anganavadis with the help of department workers and ASHA members. From July 11 to 13, house to house visit will be taken up to trace the malnutrition cases, the DHO added.
He said children suffering from malnutrition will be supplied with milk and eggs. Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director Rita Martha said that about 17,000 children are pending to be covered under health check ups.
