Mangalore, July 12: A tanker lorry carrying highly flammable methanol skidded off the National Highway 66 at Adam Kudru near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city after the driver lost control of the vehicle in the wee hours of Thursday.
The accident triggered panic in the region for several hours. However, post-midnight rain helped contain the impact of the methanol spill from the lorry, sources said.
Vijayan from Aurangabad, who was driving the tanker, has been admitted to a private hospital in the city.
Sources from Excise department said that the tanker was plying from Aurangabad in Maharashtra to Trichur in Kerala. The tanker was carrying over 20,000 litres of methanol when the accident occurred.
Fire personnel who rushed to the spot said that the incident occurred when the tanker lorry skidded off the road after ramming into an electric pole at around 1:30 am.
Eyewitnesses said that a major tragedy was averted thanks to the incessant rain, which was crucial in diluting the leak from the tanker lorry.
