BJP faces massive defeat in Karnataka urban local bodies; Cong regains ground in DK, Udupi

Mangalore/Udupi/Bangalore, Mar 11:The Congress headed for a big win in Karnataka urban local bodies, leaving ruling BJP way behind as counting of votes polled on March 7, was held across the state including in coastal districts on Monday.

Mangalore City Corporation and Udupi City Municipal Council have been won by Congress.

The Congress has so far bagged 1895 seats of the 4,893 for which results were declared by 12 noon., while the BJP was way behind, with just around 887 seats. Janata Dal-Secular was slightly ahead of the BJP, bagging about 892 seats.

Voting took place on Thursday for over 4,800 seats to run 207 urban local bodies.

Former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Party was struggling, with around 269 seats.

The rest were taken by smaller parties and independents.

Around 70 percent of 8.5 millon voters of the state's total electorate of more than 40 million had voted in the elections to urban local bodies.

Counting of votes for the urban local bodies (ULBs) that went to the polls on March 7 began this morning, across the state including coastal Karnataka amidst tight security.

The State Election Commission (SEC) has already begun declaring the results. The quickness in the announcement of results is owing to the use of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the polls for the first time.

Dakshina Kannada

In Dakshina Kannada, where 677 candidates contested from 189 wards in seven urban local bodies including the Mangalore City Corporation, the counting process began at 8 am, in all the seven counting centres in the district. The counting centres meant for the purpose are, St Rosario English/Kannada Higher Primary School Pandeshwar, Mangalore (Mangalore City Corporation), Mahaveera College Moodbidri (Moodbidri TMC), Bharath English Medium Higher Primary School Ullal (Ullal TMC), Samarthya Sowdha Bantwal (Bantwal TMC), Swami Vivekananda English Medium High School Puttur (Puttur TMC), Belthangady Town Panchayat Office (Belthangady Town Panchayat) and Sullia Taluk Office (Sullia Town Panchayat).

The results are most likely to be announced by 11 am or at the most the it might go up to noon to get the clear picture.

As many as 677 candidates including 226 female candidates are trying their luck in seven Urban Local Bodies in the distrtict.

The break up of total of number of candidates with men and women in brackets is as follows: Mangalore City Corporation (243, 93); Moodbidri (77, 29), Ullal (93, 31), Bantwal (83, 27), Puttur (88, 31), Belthangady (38, 22) and Sullia (55, 24).

Voting percentage

In the ULB election that was held on March 7, Dakshina Kannada district registered 4.2 per cent increase in the total poll compared to that of the ULB election held in 2007.

If the district had registered 62.19 polling in 2007, the district registered 66.21 polling this time.

As many as 3,06,636 voters of the total 4,60,381 voters, exercised franchise on the polling day. During this poll, it is significant to note the slight increase in the number of voters too which would also help in writing the fate of candidates. The total polling population in 2007 was 4,59,556, while for the fresh polling it was 4,60,381.

Counting at Rosario

In the backdrop of counting of polls of the election held for Mangalore City Corporation, at Rosario High School today, a total of 252 government employees including police personnel are deployed for the purpose.

It includes 48 supervisors, 48 Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) suppliers, 96 counting assistants, 12 tabulators, 12 tabulator assistants, 24 Returning Officers and AROs, 12 assistants to 12 rooms and 12 police who will function at the counting venue.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Special Investigating Team (SIT), headed by Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Sandeep Patil, subjected former underworld don turned social activist Muthappa Rai in connection with gangster and underworld don Ravi Poojary's criminal cases.

Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) said that the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Venugopal and police inspector Bulletin have questioned Rai in his house for more than two hours about Ravi Poojary case.

Muthappa Rai was allegedly one of the accused in builder Subbaraju murder case. They both were allegedly close in the initial days and they were like a team, said a senior officer. So Rai was questioned about their connection. Rai, who reformed himself many years ago, is into business and social service at present.

Kalaburgi, Jan 2: At least 10 students sustained injuries when a private bus carrying students of a school on an educational tour rammed into a tree today morning.

The mishap occurred when the students of Ayyappa School located in Chennaveera Nagar were going around the city in a bus during their tour.

The bus crashed into a tree near Venkatagiri Hotel on New Jewargi Road in the city.

A case has been registered at a traffic police station.

Chikkamagaluru, Feb 19: A 31-year-old homemaker was murdered and valuables, including 100gm of gold and 2kg of silver, were reported missing from her house in Kadur town of Chikkamagaluru district late Monday evening. Her 11-month-old son, who was with her at the time of the attack, had a miraculous escape.

Police said Kavita's husband Dr Revath was away in his clinic in the town's Kadur-Birur road along with their first son, 5. Kavita, who has done MA and from Udupi, and the dentist married seven years ago.

District superintendent of police Harish Pandey has formed a special team to probe the incident that took place in Lakshmish Nagar in the town.

According to police, Kavita spoke to her husband around 6.45pm on Monday and didn't answer his subsequent calls, triggering a strong suspicion in him that something was amiss. He called his relatives living nearby to check on his wife. The relatives rushed to the house only to find the main door locked.

Since Kavita didn't answer the doorbell, they force-entered the house from the rear door and found her in a pool of blood. She was taken to a private clinic where doctors declared her brought dead.

Police said the woman was killed by a sharp weapon by slitting her throat between 6.45pm and 8.15pm. The rooms and almirahs had been found ransacked. At least 100gm gold ornaments, 2kg of silver and cash were missing from the house.
