Babu Jagjivan Ram remembered

Mangalore, Apr 5: Babu Jagjivan Ram, former Union Minister and one of the wizards behind the idea of 'Green Revolution' in India, was remembered at a programme organized by district administration at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Friday.

Harsh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada district, paid floral tributes to the portrait of Mr. Ram on the occasion. He was joined by Dr. K N Vijayprakash, CEO, DK Zilla Panchayat, Dr. K Harish Kumar, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and K Dayanand, Additional Deputy Commissioner, DK.

Babu Jagjivan Ram hailed from backward community but made significant contribution for the uplift of the oppressed classes in the country. He was the youngest Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet and later as a Labour Minister was instrumental in the introduction of several labour welfare policies.

Babu Jagjivan Ram is best remembered for having successfully led the green revolution during his tenure as Union Minister for Food and Agriculture from 1967 to 1970.

Karnataka Minister CT Ravi tests positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Karnataka Minister CT Ravi has tested positive for COVID-19. However, his wife and staff members have tested negative.

"Yesterday, I along with my wife Pallavi and my staff members underwent COVID-19 test. Fortunately, my wife Pallavi and all my staff members are tested negative. Third umpire's result for me has confirmed that I'm COVID Positive. However, I'm feeling absolutely fine," Ravi tweeted.

"For now, I'll continue to work from here and undergo treatment. Very soon, I'll get cured and come back to work with you all," he added.
So far, Karnataka has reported 36,216 COVID-19 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

COVID-19: Karnataka records biggest single-day spike as 149 test positive; total 1,395

Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka on Tuesday recorded the highest single-day rise in the COVID-19 cases in the state as a whooping 149 people tested positive for the virus. With the spike in new cases, the overall tally has risen to 1,395.

This is for the first time the state recorded 100 plus cases in a single day. So far, 40 people have also succumbed to the virus including three deaths today.

The new deaths consist of a 61-year-old male patient, a resident of Ballari; a 65-year-old male patient, a resident of Vijayapura; and a 54-year-old male patient from Bengaluru.

Among the new cases, a maximum of 71 are reported from Mandya, followed by 22 in Davanagere, 10 in Shivamogga, 13 in Kalaburgi, six in Bengaluru Urban, four each in Udupi and Uttara Kannada, five in Chikkamagaluru, three in Hassan and one each in Yadagiri, Chitradurga, Vijayapura, Gadag.

Most of the new cases are of the people who traveled to Mumbai in Maharashtra, Solapur, Ahmedabad, and Kerala.

The remaining are those who came in contact with the people who had tested positive earlier.

At present, 811 people are actively taking treatment, while 543 have been discharged after recovery.

Fisheries fully shut down in Mangaluru amid COVID-19 scare

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Amid fear of coronavirus spread, the District Collector on Friday ordered the closure of the city’s major fishing area Dhakke.

''The fish caught by us on Wednesday were dumped, without being sold'', fishermen said. Meanwhile, a few them obtained police permission and took the fish to the nearby fish mill.

All the boats which had gone for fishing are back to the dock and the port is deserted. Also, the fishermen who went fishing have been advised to return.
