Headed for funeral, wedding, Gulf-based families perish

Dubai, May 22 :  A Saudi businessman lost 16 family members in Saturday's plane crash in Mangalore who were going to attend his grandmother's funeral. Another family from Dubai was on its way to a wedding when it perished in the tragedy.

 

Saudi Arabia-based businessman Sameer Sheikh lost 16 relatives, including his wife and two children, in the Air India Express tragedy that claimed 158 lives. All 16 were travelling to Mangalore to attend the last rites of Sheikh's grandmother who had died Friday.

Sheikh was in Mumbai and waiting to catch a flight to Mangalore at the time of the incident.

"I flew into Mumbai from Saudi Arabia yesterday and was scheduled to catch a Jet Airways flight to Mangalore this morning as I could not get a connecting flight from there," he said.

 

A Gulf News staff member, her husband and their daughter were also among those killed in the disaster. They were to attend a wedding.

Manirekha Poonja, who worked in the Dubai-based daily's finance department, was flying with her husband and their 17-year-old daughter for her cousin's marriage, the paper reported.

"When we heard the crash news, we got in touch with our relative in Mangalore. Her name is not among the survivors," a family member said. Poonja's daughter Harshini was a student of media and communications.

Kasaragod, Apr 10: Eleven people died so far in Kerala's northern district Kasargod as they could not access medical facilities in Mangaloru since the border roads were blocked by the Karnataka Government, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Addressing a press conference at the Government Secretariat here, the Chief Minister said, "It is really unfortunate that people from Kasargod district in Kerala are still being denied treatment in hospitals at Mangalore in Karnataka State."

"We will improve the medical facilities in Kasargod and if necessary, patients will be airlifted to the neighbouring districts in Kerala to provide emergency medical assistance," he added.

Shivamogga, Mar 8: In a tragic incident, three people died on the spot and one person severely injured after a car, in which they were travelling dashed against a wayside tree in Kaspadi village in Sagar Taluk on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Siddappa (40), Venkatesha (50), G Tippanna (60), while injured Nagaraj, was admitted to Hospital at Sagar.

The mishap took place when the victims were their way to visit Kargal Village from Raichur.

Bengaluru, Mar 6: PVR Cinemas on Friday launched its five-screen multiplex in here, augmenting its presence in Karnataka across 15 properties to 103 screens and to 46 properties and 286 screens in southern India.

With this opening, PVR consolidates its growth momentum in the current financial year 2019-20, so far opening 83 screens in the year and bringing its portfolio to 841 screens at 176 properties in 71 cities.

"We feel proud to cross the 100 screens milestone in the state of Karnataka at the very beginning of the year," said Joint Managing Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli.

"Southern India has a strong market with significant growth potential. In Bengaluru, we have introduced some of our best formats and offerings owing to the nature of preferences by our customers," he said in a statement.
