Plan to install Ganesh idol at Indian Embassy in Kuwait triggers controversy

Kuwait City, Sep 17: A plan by the authorities at Indian Embassy in Kuwait to formally celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi by installing an idol of Ganesh in the embassy building has triggered a controversy.

Highly placed sources said that the diplomatic authorities had planned to formally install the Ganesh idol near the guest room of the Embassy on Thursday. When Coastaldigest.com tried to contact the embassy, the phones went unanswered.

However, after the information about the preparation for the ‘installation ceremony’ leaked through social media socio-cultural activists and Indian expatriate community in the oil-rich country expressed concern over a ‘possible conspiracy’.

It is learnt that the controversial Ganesha idol, said to be in possession of the authorities of the diplomatic mission of India in Kuwait, was in fact purchased by a Kuwaiti national out of curiosity during his visit to India. When he decided to desert the idol after sometime, the embassy officials reportedly approached him and took it into their possession.

Sources said that the embassy officials have also sent formal invitations to a few people for the planned Ganesh idol installation ceremony on Thursday as part of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is learnt that Indian Ambassador to Kuwait also has given green signal for the ceremony.

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Thousands of people on Wednesday boarded boats from Ullal's Kotepura to join a massive protest against the amended Citizenship Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Adyar here.

People travelling through boats and steamers decorated with national flags, raised slogans during their journey through the Netravathi River.

The innovative mode of transportation was used by the protestors to reach the venue, as it not only saved time but was also more convenient for the fishermen, as large number of people from this community joined the protest.

The protestors docked their boats at the shore, which was barely 500 metres from the site of protest, being held at Shah Ground in Adyar.

The distance between Kotepura to the Shah Ground is approximately 15 kilometres but protesters would have to walk more five kilometres to reach the venue because of heavy traffic.

Due to protest, the national highway was also blocked and resulted in huge traffic snarls on routes leading to agitation site.

Udupi, May 21: In a shocking development, as many as 27 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported in the coastal district of Udupi today. 

Another shocker is, 16 among 27 covid-19 patients are children. The rest are six men and five women. 

Interestingly, all of them have inter-state travel history. 23 had come from Maharashtra and 3 from Telangana. Another one had come from Kerala to Manipal. More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Wednesday strongly urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to desist from invoking amendment to the Land Reforms Act, saying it would make buying land easier for the corporate companies and the rich.

In a hard-hitting letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the media, the Congress leader had urged to rescind the decision from amending to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and also Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee Act.

Asserting that the state government's move was only intending to help to the land grabbers, Siddaramaiah, also the former chief minister, said easing of restrictions to buy land to the tune of over 216 acres per individual would sound a death knell to the farm sector.
