VTU examination paper evaluation goes digital

Bangalore, April 5: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has digitised evaluation of answer scripts, beginning with the semester examinations held recently.

With more than 200 affiliate engineering colleges and nearly three lakh students, the varsity will have 25 lakh answer scripts for evaluation for each examination it conducts.

In order to assess the quality of the new system, Shruth and Smith Foundation, in association with PACER Foundation, held a meeting of principals of various engineering colleges, VTU officials and student representatives.

A few concerns expressed about the system involved questions about the safety of scanning of answer scripts for evaluation, which faced the risk of hacking. Also, one of the requirements of the evaluation system is to cut the stitched portion of the answer script to make it scanning-friendly.

Many felt the answer sheets could either get mixed up, or extra sheets would be placed in an answer script to help a student.

However, those involved in the digitisation of answer scripts have given the new system a thumbs-up. Puttaraju, principal, SJBIT College, said digitised evaluation had helped in the early release of examination results, besides allowing students ample time for the next examination, in case they planned to enrol for repetition of a paper.

The system has reduced manpower for evaluation, thereby reducing the cost. Closed circuit television cameras monitor the entire process to ensure fair evaluation of papers, said Sridhar, principal of KES College.

Regarding doubts expressed about transparency in evaluation, lecturers and principals said the new system was more transparent than manual evaluation.

The question paper distribution system has also been upgraded to plug leakage, said Krishnamurthy, registrar (evaluation), VTU. Question papers will be accessible to the colleges concerned only if they have access to the software, for which the college has to provide the static IP address registered with the university.

Whenever colleges access the soft copy of a question paper for printing, the central system will monitor the duration for which a college has logged in. Question papers have to be printed within 30-45 minutes of logging in. The paper will automatically disappear from the system once the printing process is completed, he explained.

Authenticity questioned

Student activists have questioned the authenticity of the process. Digital evaluation has no accountability as examiners do not sign their names on the answer scripts, they say.

They have also questioned the claim that results can be announced faster with the new system. In December last year, one of the scanning centres took 30 days to scan 1, 20,000 answer scripts and more than 20,000 results were withheld, they pointed out.

Till date, 3,000 results are pending, the activists alleged. Contrary to the university"s claim, the digital evaluation process is expensive, as it not only involves cost for technology, but also travel allowances for evaluators.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The centenary year of St. Agnes College got off to a grand start on January 3, 2020 with a day of commemoration that involved staff, students, alumni and benefactors. The college is all set to celebrate its centenary with the community of Mangaluru on January 10, 2020 from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m with a daylong festival – Knowledge Factory. KNOWLEDGE FACTORY is the first of the five mega centenary programmes that St. Agnes College has envisaged.  The Promise Foundation and niiti Consulting – two organisations headquartered in the national capital under the mentorship of veteran journalist Madhavan Narayan are collaborating with the college to bring this event to Mangaluru for the first time.  A dozen icons will share the stage throughout the day and bring forth their thoughts and ideas enabling a culture of learning through fire-side chats and keynotes. 

The speakers include Lisa Ray, Indo-Canadian Actor and Author; Sunil Buch, Director, Live Nation; Dipannita Sharma, Actor and Supermodel; Kriti Tula, Co-Founder and Creative Director, Doodlage; Nandini Srikar, Singer and Composer; Prakash Belawadi, Movie and Theatre Actor,  Manasi Paresh Kumar, Senior Journalist; Swati Pande, Co-Founder and CEO, Arboreal; Anuradha Kedia Parekh, Co-Founder, The Better India; Arokiaswamy Velumani, Founder and Chairman, Thyrocare Technologies; Heena Sidhu, the former world  number 1 pistol shooter. The event anchor will be the celebrity news reader Rini Simon Khanna who has been anchoring the event since its first edition in 2017.

Gaurava Yadav, a well-known quiz master will conduct a quiz focussed on History.  Based on a written prelims that will take place at 8.15 am in the designated room, four teams of two members each will compete in the finals at 4.45 pm. The winning team will receive a prize of INR 30,000 and the runner up team will receive INR.20,000/-    

The event is put together by social entrepreneurs - Meena Vadiyanathan and Amith Prabhu (who is of Mangalorean origin). All who desire to attend the event and participate in the quiz may buy donor passes costing Rs 500/- per head which includes lunch.  Sale of donor passes will close on the 8th. The core objective of the new National Education Policy (NEP), which has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts, will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework, CBSE director said on Friday.

CBSE Director Biswajit Saha made the comments during an e-conclave on the new NEP organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The core objective of the policy will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), which needs more participatory approach. The policy has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts and multidisciplinary approach. The NCF will give a roadmap for implementation of reforms laid down in the policy,” he said.

Saha said the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders.

“There could be a debate about the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes but once we have decided we want to do it, it can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders. It is a forward-looking policy,” the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) director said.

The NEP approved by the Union Cabinet replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower.

Choice between 3 or 4 year undergraduate courses, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, adding 3.5 crore seats in higher education institutions, which will now have a single regulator, discontinuation of M.Phil programmes and fixation of fees are among the higher education reforms outlined in the new NEP.
