Faizabad, April 16: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said his government would free Muslim youth who had been falsely implicated under terror charges. He was in the city to attend party MLA Tej Narain Pandey's wedding reception.

The state government has sought opinion from the law department to withdraw cases against the accused in the November 2007 serial blasts in Faizabad and Lucknow court premises, Akhilesh said. "We are committed to our poll manifesto and those Muslim youth who were arrested under false terror charges would be released soon," the chief minister said.

On reports of newborn babies being sold at government hospitals, Akhilesh said, "If there is any truth in these allegations, we will ask the district administration to help the families."

Akhilesh said complaints of illegal mining in the state were being looked into and added that his government was considering revamping the existing mining policy.

Raising the controversial issue of changing names of districts, Samajwadi Party leader Jai Shankar Pandey requested Akhilesh to change the name of Ambedkarnagar to Lohiyanagar. A part of undivided Faizabad, Ambedkarnagar was carved out of Faizabad in 1996 under the Mayawati government. Being the birthplace of Ram Manohar Lohiya, SP leaders demanded that the district be named after the socialist leader.

Akhilesh reiterated his promise to leave statues in the parks constructed by Mayawati untouched. He said the government would build schools, colleges and hospitals on empty spaces available within the parks.

Akhilesh said Ayodhya and Faizabad would jointly get the status of a municipal corporation.

New Delhi, Mar 11: A doctor in Kerala on Tuesday alleged that she was sacked by the management of the private clinic she was working with for informing authorities about a non-resident Indian (NRI) patient who reportedly declined to undergo the mandatory check for coronavirus.

Dr Shinu Syamalan said the patient had come to the clinic recently with suspected symptoms of the virus.

"When he was asked whether he had visited any foreign countries, he said he was coming from Qatar. But he had not reported to the Health department about his foreign trip," she said.

When he was directed to inform about his foreign travel to the state Health Department, which has been monitoring people coming from abroad for the virus, he refused and said he was going back to Qatar, she told reporters.

Concerned over the health of the person who had high fever, Ms Syamalan informed health and police authorities.

"Officials who let the patient go abroad do not have any problem, but I have become jobless," she posted on social media.

She alleged she was sacked by the management of the clinic for reporting the matter to police and informing the public about the incident through social media and through television.

"The argument of the management is that no one would turn up for treatment in the clinic if they come to know that it was visited by patients with suspected symptoms of Coronavirus," she said.

There was no immediate reaction from the management of the private health clinic.

Official sources said the District Medical Officer (DMO) at Thrissur has complained to the collector against Shinu Syamalan accusing her of defaming health officials.

New Delhi, Jan 22: The BJP on Wednesday cited statements of several opposition leaders to accuse them of "abusing" Hindus for their appeasement politics and referred to the Congress as "Muslim League Congress".

Seeking apologies from Congress president Sonia Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said leaders of these parties have used the ongoing protests against the amended citizenship law to "abuse" Hindus.

Chavan has said in a public meeting that the Congress decided to join hands with the Shiv Sena to form government in Maharashtra as Muslims wanted the party to stop the BJP, Patra stated, claiming that it shows the opposition party has nothing to do with people belonging to other religions, including Hindus.

Patra also referred to a statement from an NCP leader to attack the opposition.

Asked about Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's reported jibe at the RSS for its "non-participation" in the freedom movement, the BJP leader shot back, asking if parents of Sonia Gandhi, who is of Italian origin, had fought in India's independence struggle.

The Indian National Congress, he said referring to the opposition party's full name, should be called "Muslim League Congress".
