Hazare, Ramdev to hold joint fast on June 3

Ram_HazNew Delhi, April 20: Yoga guru Ramdev and social activist Anna Hazare on Friday declared joint campaign against corruption and black money. They have decided to together go on a one-day fast at Jantar Mantar here on June 3 to press their demands.

Addressing a joint press conference at Gurgaon, they charged the government with being scared of getting back black money stashed in safe havens abroad and of accepting the Jan Lokpal Bill drafted by members of Indian Against Corruption (IAC) movement.

The government had formed last year a joint drafting panel with a few members of the IAC to arrive at an understanding on a draft Bill against corruption. The Jan Lokpal Bill was discussed but ultimately the government draft of Lokpal Bill was sent to Parliament and referred to the Standing Committee. Team Anna had accused the government of ``betrayal’’ for not sending their draft for consideration of Parliament as had been assured to them during joint drafting panel meetings.

Criticising the government draft of the Lokpal Bill, Mr. Hazare said it was ``weak and ineffective’’. In contrast the Jan Lokpal Bill was strong and could deliver he declared. ``If the Jan Lokpal Bill were to come half the ministers would be in jail,’’ he added.

The social activist said corruption was so deep-rooted that most of the development funds did not reach those for whom they were meant.

Seeking a Lokayukta Bill in Maharashtra, Mr. Hazare said he will soon meet the deputy Chief Minister of the state on the issue. From May 1 he will tour the entire state to ``awaken people against corruption’’.

Reiterating that the IAC did not want the government to fall, he said ``if it does not listen to people, then it will fall’’.

Baba Ramdev declared his own plans to tour the country but said they will join hands against corruption and black money and have a joint campaign at some places.

Visakhapatnam, May 7: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday announced an ex- gratia payment of Rs one crore each to the kin of those killed in the styrene gas leak incident at LG Polymers Limited near here.

The NDRF had put the death toll from the leak at 11.

The chief minister announced a committee to probe into the mishap and also said the government would talk to the LG Polymers management seeking job for the kin of the deceased in any of its businesses.

Speaking to reporters after conducting a review meeting, Reddy also announced Rs 10 lakh each to those undergoing treatment on ventilator support and Rs 25,000 to those who took treatment as out-patients after developing health complications due to inhalation of the styrene vapour.

Earlier, he held a review meeting at the Andhra Medical College with District Collector Vinay Chand and others.

The gas leak victims undergoing treatment in various hospitals would be paid Rs one lakh each. The 15,000-odd population in the five villages that were affected by the gas leak would be paid Rs 10,000 each, the chief minister added.

Reddy further announced constitution of a high-level committee, headed by the Special Chief Secretary (Environment and Forests), to probe into the mishap and make recommendations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Earlier, he visited the King George Hospital and consoled the victims of the gas leak.

Accompanied by his Deputy holding the health portfolio A K K Srinivas and Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney, Reddy flew down to the port city and went straight to the KGH.

He met the gas leak victims undergoing treatment and enquired about their well-being.

At the review meeting, the Collector informed the Chief Minister that the gas spread was limited to a 1.5 to 2 km area from the epicentre of the leak and that the locals were evacuated to safety.

Of the two styrene tanks in the plant, the leak occurred from one that was holding about 1,800 kilo litres of the chemical.

Ayodhya, Aug 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday recalled the significance of the path of 'maryada' associated with Lord Ram in the backdrop of the situation created by COVID-19 and emphasised the importance of social distancing and wearing face masks.

He said that the current situation demands 'maryada' should be 'do gaz ki doori, mask hai zaroori' and exhorted everyone to follow it.

In his speech after laying the foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the Prime Minister said the temple of Lord Ram will inspire and guide humans for ages to come.

He said that the path of `maryada' followed by Lord Ram is all the more necessary today in the situation created by COVID-19.

"The `maryada' (need) today is do gaj ki doori, mask hai jaroori (keep distance of two yards, wear mask). The Almighty may keep all the citizens healthy and happy, this is my prayer. The blessings of Mother Sita and Shri Ram be always there on the citizens," he said.

The Prime Minister termed the occasion as historic and said that India is starting a glorious chapter when people across the country are excited and emotional to have finally achieved what they had been waiting for centuries.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 27: Over 1.5 lakh Non-Resident Keralites (NRK)s, stranded in various countries, have registered online for returningto the state, once the Centre gives the nod and air services resume

The Norka (Non Resident Keralites Affairs) department had commenced the registration process at around 6pm on Sunday and within an hour 25,000 had registered, government sources said.

Till Monday morning, over 1.5 lakh NRKs have registered, the maximum is from UAE-- over 60,000.

The aged, pregnant women, children, critically ill patients, those with expired visas and those who had gone abroad on visiting visa are among thelarge numbers of people who are waiting to return.

Those wanting to return, have to get themselves tested for COVID-19 in the respective countries, where they are and register after getting a negative certificate for the infection.

Theregistration is for arranging quarantine facilitiesin the state, if necessary, and not for getting any priority on flight bookings,the sources said.

After the NRKs register themselves, the government would draw up a list on how to bring them back as per priority.
